Pick any games that you want to watch again this year and you can see Jimmy struggled when he has to read defenses or when the play is not a gimmick..

each time he has to drop back and find the open receiver, the guy is slow in his progression..

Even the nicest pass he completes, you can tell that its off of a gimmick play where his target " will be there "..

Hopefully he will be the next head coach

Personally, if I was Saleh and wanted a run dominated offense, I'd have taken Benton and made him my OC. Just my .02

Benton is just an OL coach. McDaniel is considered a brilliant mind and an innovative run designer. Mike Shanahan used to rave about how smart McDaniel was and why his potential allowed him to stick around despite his alcohol issues. But I just learned that LaFleur and Saleh are BFFs. Apparently, LaFleur was Saleh's best man at his wedding. It was a no brainer for him then.

Good for us.

I had read this awhile ago and I think it put Saleh in a bit of a pinch. Everything I have read pointed to McDaniel being the more gifted coach. Kyle probably said he could take LaFleur but not McDaniel too.
This could be problematic for Saleh, in NY, if LaFleur's offense fails. Does he fire his best friend or just hang on him too long. LaFleur could turn out to be a great OC, I just haven't heard any praise, at this point, going his way.
They're both professionals though, so we'll see how it turns out.

. Now that would be a tough situation. Good to read that McDaniels is considered the more intelligent football mind and that he's staying. At some point he may want to run his own show. I wonder who Kyle brings in to fill LaFleur's shoes so that when/if McDaniels leaves, that guy takes over.

I don't think that situation would be that bad. If they are that close I'm sure they would have more direct conversations than most. To the point where Lafleur would likely willingly walk away as opposed to put Saleh in that situation.

I don't think Saleh ever planned to take both. This provided an opportunity for one to spread their wings and fly solo as the man on the offensive side of the ball.

And the other would also go from run or pass game coordinator to simply being an offensive assistant/position coach.

design and call the plays??

.. and Shanny will just walk around and command ?

I just can't see this happening...

My take is that it's just McDaniel's move is symbolic title to prevent Saleh from poaching him (or any other team for that matter), Kyle's going to be the playcaller. What I can see though is McDaniel being more involved in crafting the passing game, in addition, to his old responsibilities crafting the running game. Having one guy doing the planning and assisting the HC vs two guys (with two different perspectives) - might make the passing and running game more efficient, and hopefully eliminate those WTF throws by Jimmy.

I think he's better off becoming the QB coach and teach Grappy how to read defenses.. because Kyle relied on his gimmick passing plays, it slowed Grappy's development on how to read defenses..

I think Jimmy is a fine QB. If he wasn't we wouldn't be in the Super Bowl in 2019.

Having said that, Jimmy needs to stay healthy. Kyle needs to pick some WR's for him that can play an entire 19 game season. He needs to avoid picking the Pettis's and Hurd's of the world in terms of draft picks. I'm still hoping Hurd pans out, by the way. But a lot of the passing game is the receiver and the QB working together. You can't throw to a double covered receiver, so you come off and then look to the other side and your single receiver is also being jammed and can't get off the line. I other words, I think, a lot of the offensive problems laid at Jimmy's feet can be also blamed on the WR's (because of a lack of talent, injuries, or just not being in synch due to inconsistent playing time). It's not all Jimmy's fault. I'm also looking forward to seeing if Kyle will get a more mobile QB in the draft, and the Josh Rosen acquisition, I think, was a good move too.

Good post, Giedi - I'd take Lance at #12 - he's very mobile.

I don't either. What I was trying to say was that since Saleh & LaFleur were best friends, the decision was already made prior to Saleh getting the job. I believe that McDaniel would have been a better candidate for his OC. Whether Kyle would have let McDaniel go, nobody knows. A best friend working directly under me is not something I would want, especially in the cutthroat NFL.

It's happened before. Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt were great friends. Same with Bill Walsh and Sam Wyche. For Saleh & LaFleur's sake, I hope it works out. I think if the Jets draft well, it will.
It was already said once in the topic a page ago, but Saleh's BFF is MATT, GB's head coach and Mike's older bro.

If they take Wilson instead of Fields they should be fine. If not both will be canned in 3 years when he fails

Nice.
Good for Mike, good for the 49ers.
It's official. Won't be long before he's a head coach too. Wonder who we'll start developing in the pipeline to replace him?
