Still don't understand what actually killed him. Hard to imagine an elite athlete dying of chronic alcoholism at age 38.
It happens. High alcohol intake can wipe out your liver and kidneys in a flash. You can live if one internal organ fails. But 2-3 at a time? And it does tend to happen at a shockingly young age.
One lady I knew fairly well passed in her mid 30's. Her funeral was surreal.

Alcohol affects people differently. Genetics has a LOT to do with your body's ability to cope. If you're Northern European, you tend to manage better. If you're not... it hits hard.

I always found alcohol to be the most extreme of the available drugs on the market. Not due to addiction, but because of the purely disorienting effects and side effects in larger quantities. The misery of a hangover is probably tops on my list of things to avoid.
