So you'd be fine seeing Jimmy G. wearing #27?

Who cares? Never understood why football was so weird about numbers compared to other sports. Let them go crazy.

For me this is an easy one to explain. The reason football is different than any other sport regarding number restrictions has mostly to do with who can handle the ball during an organized play. Unless they check in with the ref numbers 50-79, and 90-99 cannot handle the ball from scrimmage. The numbering restriction system actually started in collage ball and wasn't adopted into the NFL until the early 50's. The AAFL (not the AFL) had a more specific numbering delegation by position, where FB's wore 70's numbers, QB's wore 60's numbers, and centers wore numbers in the 20's. The AFL allowed for 00 numbers, and WR's in the 20's.
The current NFL numbering system started in 1973 (I believe) which excluded 0 and 00. Again, this has to do with controlling who can handle the ball. Restricting numbers by position helps to keep an even playing field. Otherwise the game would be impossible to control, and the defense would literally have no chance to compete, which would truly make the game not enjoyable to watch. It's tied to other rules of the game like only 5 men can go down field. In addition, the NFL values structure (as do I). Such a beautiful game aught not be left to anarchy. Numbers by position provides uniformity and structure. I'm not sure why the NFL or collage don't allow for 0 or 00. As a football coach myself I don't allow it for symbolic reason. I tell my players "I don't coach 0's. 0's are losers." I don't know for sure that the NFL see's it the same way, but I suspect it does. 0's, 00's, and 100 numbers are reserved for mascots, where they belong.
I have more, but I don't wanna write a book . . . .

Reggie Bush with his number 5 too.
I think I remember Bush saying he wanted to come in as an official QB for his position and then "transition" to runningback so he would keep the number
I think Devin Hester kept 23 when he went from
corner to WR
