Swapped Thomas for Key. He's definitely an upgrade at edge.

I'm just here to toot my own horn

Well, he wasn't very good at edge, so can't really toot your own horn. I think he had 1 sack all season at edge and that was when he got matched up on a tight end.

But the dude has been a force from inside. He's been a massive upgrade as a pass rusher over Javon Kinlaw. Who foresaw Kinlaw getting hurt would actually be the key(no pun intended) to unlocking our pass rush? Key's win rate from inside has been unreal.

I was expecting his response because he's been way more disruptive inside but hasn't been too shabby on the outside.

Still upgrade over Thomas. so, toot toot

Erases the Hyder loss too.

Hyder will be back on the team with a cheap 1 year contract in 2023

Key is interesting. If he took another one-year deal with us and played next season like the second half of this one, he would cash out in a major way.

In any event, they are both great advertisements for players looking for a chance to prove themselves and cash out.

I wonder what weight he's playing at now. I saw 240, but he looks thicker than that.
Ebukam got all the credit for this sack, but it was Arden Key that beats the left guard and clears out a giant lane for Ebukam stumble into after he got chipped. Armstead takes 2. Great group effort.

Great point, and on top of that I think Ebukam got held on that stunt. Tough to hold a DLineman when he's stunting. Have to let go and switch assignments to be successful and that's where I think Kocureck is a genius at developing those techniques.

Key and AA are so disruptive as nickel DTs. AA and Bosa cannot be consistently blocked 1v1 in pass rushing situations. Pick your poison. In this clip, GB uses a TE to chip on one side, and a RB to chip on the other. 49ers are playing man in this clip, but when the 49ers play zone, that's initially 7 zone defenders covering 3 routes. The two chippers release late into their route. That helps coverage so much.

It's incredible what bumping these 2 inside has done for our DL. Honestly, this interior combo might be better as a rush combo than Defo and AA in 2019. Arden Key's win rate is elite from inside. I swear it seems like he wins every single time that he gets a 1-on-1 inside.

AA is too powerful for guards. Key is too quick for guards.

Arden Key on the inside reminds me a bit of Gary "Big Hands" Johnson on that '84 team that shut down Marino.

I know cuz that's what I'm concerned about as well.

Cuz chances are he's going to want a pretty good extension as well as perhaps the opportunity to start

And at 240 or 250 as a defensive tackle especially with his style of play that doesn't necessarily fit to be an every down player in the wide nine makes me question how are they going to proceed with this situation

It will be interesting nonetheless
We got to keep him. He's tremendous.

Key is good at his niche role as nickel DT pass rusher. I'd rather not pay Key and make sure the team retains DJJones, if it's an either/or situation. Especially if the team stays with the wide9 where we need DJJ to play stout run defense. Can't count on Kinlaw to fully rebound and be a contributor.

Completely agree about keeping DJ if it's an either/or with Key. DJ is very good in this scheme in the middle and is a problem for OLs...can't believe a guy with his size can move like he can. Plus, he showed more durability this season.
