You're likely right. The 49ers aren't going to let some guy signed off the street who was freshly cut by the Raiders come in and replace their 14th overall pick. The optics of that would be disastrous. They made a massive investment in Kinlaw, and he's going to get every opportunity to develop. Let's pray he does because that would be massive for the organization.

Pretty much.
The Niners are going to do what makes the best sense for them moving forward. If any of you doubt this then look at how much time Solomon Thomas and Joshua Garnett got during their tenures here as their play didn't match up to the expectation. Hurst is a very solid 3-Tech for us. I see this as a type of lowkey awesome signing similar to the one which got the Seahawks Michael Bennett for a FA bargain going into 2013. The real reason this guy slipped is because many teams were in salary cap hell due to the lowered cap coming into this offseason.

Solly got plenty of opportunities.
Schemes and people often are the reason for success in teamwork. For you OG's: remember waaayyy back in the day when Da' Bears were running the 46 defense and the talk of the NFL were the LB's Singletary, Wilson, and Wilbur Marshall? And Wilbur went to the WFT and was rarely heard from again? Well, what you see here is success by addition, people, and scheme. The Niners IDL will be extremely successful. The only thing that needs to happen is plug and play because players will be leaving and cashing in after each Super Bowl win😎

So did Garnett, until someone better came along - which is the point. Thomas ended up being slowly supplanted by DJ Jones and Garnett was supplanted by every scrub guard we could throw out there because the FO isn't going to let sunk cost fallacy stop them from putting out the best team possible. The examples are many from CJ Beathard being replaced by Mullens, to Mostert replacing Breida, to Mosely replacing Whiterspoon, so on and so on...

IDK, he was on the market for less than a week.

I hear what your saying I just don't think Solly is the best example as he remained in the Dline Rotation. He even got the start over Kinlaw against the Cards and Jets the first two games of last season.
I think people will be surprised by how well Hurst does, but they really shouldn't.

The 2nd biggest surprise of the offseason (after Hudson's departure), it's honestly still hard to believe we cut him. Like clockwork, every Monday after the games I'd load up the All-22 of the game and, like clockwork, he was consistently one of the only highlights on our entire defense. For 3 seasons. And speaking of those 3 seasons, he finished as our #1 graded defender in 2020, our #1 graded defender in 2019, and our #3 graded defender in 2018 (as a Rookie) among players with 200+ Snaps each season.

In 2019 he finished with the 3rd Highest Win Rate % out of ALL NFL Defensive Tackles when double-teamed, when he posted a 16.9% Win Rate vs. 2+ Blockers. So what did Paul Guenther (and Marinelli) do the next year? Use him less. Like, way less. Because of course. In 2020 he was only played on 25.0% of our defensive snaps, in favor of Maliek Collins who week-in/week-out was a dumpster fire.
Can't believe the raiders essentially traded out Hurst for Solomon Thomas 😂😂😂
