Very few great quarterbacks can come in as a rookie and do well(Manning, Marino,Elway, maybe Russ Wilson). Most end up on the worst teams and have no choice to get thrown out there to try to give fans hope.
We have the luxury of letting him learn and spot play just like Mahomes, Rodgers, and Montana.
Jimmy will probably break down at some point this year, so Lance will get his chance.
See I still don't get the they don't have a choice but to play them? If the best possible way for a QB to be successful was to sit them for a yr, every single team would do that…even the bad ones.
Much harder to keep a guy on the bench when the team sucks than to store him.
Montana was probably the only exception to the rule (maybe...DeBerg wasn't bad), but typically unless there's a proper starter in place it doesn't happen.
If we drafted Mahomes, he would have played just like Beathard did that season. If Favre left Green Bay within those first three seasons of Rodgers' career, Rodgers would have seen the field.
Big Ben replaced garbage. Eli replaced an out of place Kurt Warner (midway through the season).
Wilson IMO had an amazing situation from a pure defense/RB scenario, but very limited pitch count those first few years. How many teams can afford to do that now?
The low pitch count is how you play a rookie. Kyle could theoretically do that, but no need to with Jimmy.
Trey might be on a pitch count when he finally does start. Wouldn't surprise me, and that's likely the best scenario.
With Lawrence and Zachary Wilson struggling, suddenly it doesn't seem like a terrible idea to sit our boy.
There are always exceptions to the rule (i.e. a rookie that does better starting than sitting), but normally better to give them an additional year(s) of experience to acclimate to the mental aspects of the game on and off the field. Then in that rookie season they will get their first NFL snaps under low pressure situations (ideally), and it takes pressure off.
By year 2, 3, they'll be far more ready mentally for the game. Over time, the reps they get will offset the inexperience. Ideally, the first 16 games in a QB's career would be better a year or two after being drafted than 9 months after.
Garoppolo is another beneficiary of this. His first NFL snaps were in a blowout loss to KC where he got the only TD for the Patriots, then he gets his first start to supplant a suspended Brady (less pressure because not true starter). Goes to SF on a terrible team, no pressure......
Say what you want about Garoppolo but he earned a franchise contract correctly, and I think if he never suffered the ACL would've been on a better track than he is now.
Answer this:
How good would a rookie Garoppolo have been like in 2014 starting in lieu of Brady? The year they beat the Hawks on a last second miracle.
