First off - I am a Jimmy fan. His cool leadership brought a lot of confidence to this team. Always appreciate the heck out of that.
Second, I was skeptical of all these QBs. But after watching Trey a lot this weekend I am way more confident this young guy could play way sooner than expected.
BUT, after watching hours of Trey Lance tape it becomes WAY MORE obvious that elements to his game that are missing in Jimmy, which I am sad to say. There is a lot to Trey's game that he needs to perfect with reps, but what he does naturally jumps off the screen when you watch it all together.
What Trey does so naturally that are real limitations in Jimmy's game, Trey...
1. instinctively climbs the pocket and finds a lane to throw
2. can actually drive the ball on out throws and deep out throws
3. has great touch into small windows on deep balls (some of his high arch throws remind me off Russel Wilson)
4. when he rolls outside the pocket he doesn't need to slow or stop his feet to throw
5. his hips follow his eyes / snap quickly on read progressions
6. he is strong in the pocket with defenders near or touching him (similar to Rothlesberger - we'll see if that stays true at the NFL level) Jimmy was fearless throwing with a guy in his face, but guys in his feet were a huge problem to his ability to drive the ball. Lance has the arm strength to drive the ball even as his feet are being moved.
We can't even compare the running ability, its stunning that such a big guy is that fast and elusive. (Kap was an amazing runner, but not nearly as elusive.)
It is super hard to tell with the jump in the level of competition, but I personally see a kid now that can take Shannahan's tutelage and start sooner than many would believe. Shannahan has shown before that he is willing to start rookies with way less talent than Trey - Griffin, Bethard, and even Mullens. Yes, some by necessity, but he didn't not taper back the game plan immensely for those guys.

I still don't see how he was the pick over Fields if they wanted a dual threat. For all the talk of him running bootlegs and stuff. His ball placement on those boots rarely leads to YAC to wide open guys. The best thing about his deep balls is he underthrows them to get pass interference.
I tried finding the positive in this pick and I just don't see how he was picked over the other 2. Nothing about his passing suggests he should have been a top 5 pick.
I think it was the mental stuff (Fields vs Lance). I think Fields goes through his progressions and has a great football IQ, I just think Lance is better. He's just a faster processor overall and you know how much I love me some Fields.
While not having a s**t ton of reps is a bummer, it also means he doesn't have a bunch of bad habits ingrained into him as well. You could just see the improvements in his mechanics over the past 5+ months (it was impressive) That WILL improve his overall accuracy. His footwork looked amazing from everything we've seen and more reps will make it more consistent. I actually think he's got a better base (starting point) then Allen or Mahomes when they came out of college.
We complain about "accuracy" in the same fashion that people complained about Watson/Herbert's "accuracy issues" coming out of college just as well. Lance is younger then them. IMO If Lance stayed in school he would have been the #1 pick in 2022. SF just gets to work with him a yr earlier.
Kid's film is that of a 19 yr old and overall it's pretty darn impressive, now get him in SF with Kyle and watch the improvement...he's still a pup but has elite traits. This is a long-term investment and I love it![]()
I think the fact that Trey is 2-3 years younger than Fields made the biggest difference. The kid is very mature for a 19 year old and already has a Pro Style foundation. Not often to NFL coaches get a chance to mold a 19 year-old QB that hasn't been "corrupted" by the college gimmicks.
Peter King article (good read), Kyle was obsessing about what he could do with this type of QB to the point where he wasn't able to sleep.
We are in a good place. We have a legit NFL starting QB in Jimmy and Kyle gets to mold a bright talent.
He's not 19. He'll be 21 on Sunday.

I wanna be happy but I can´t.
Well I´m happy we didn´t get Mac Jones.
"One-read QB"
Yup another user that didn't watch the tape
There's was a lot of that going on before the draft too.
I kept hearing "there's nothing Lance does better than Fields" and those same people making statements that proved they haven't watched Lance's tape.
The Reddit poster said Lance's feet sucked and yet very credible scouts called Lance's feet "teaching tape" for our system.
It wouldn't shock me if Lance and Fields are the two best QBs from this class. But Fields style of holding onto the football was not going to be valued with KS.

In a way, Lance scrambles a litte bit like Russell Wilson. And one positive, he always keeps his eyes down the field while scrambling. The comparison with Colin is just silly. Nothing against Kaep but between the pistol offense, the elongated motion and the one read thing, he wasn´t Trey Lance 1.0 at all. Lance is more a Josh Allen type. The McNair comparison is pretty good too.
I wanted Fields I won´t lie but Lance is an exciting prospect.
And it´s the type of choice Kyle should have made for his future QB.

ya this is a bad take
he is defintiely not a 1 read QB. He is better at going through progressions than Fields which may be part of the reason why he dropped outside top 10.
Accuracy is an issue though but i think that can be fixed by mechanics he hasnt been playing QB that long and just needs reps. You should see the tape of lawrence accuracy when he first came into college and see how he improved through the years. Im hoping Lance can make the same progression thats why i hope he can sit for a year and just get a good amount of practice reps in

The order that Jones, Fields, and Lance will see the field first.
Jones
Fields
Lance
If Jones wins a Superbowl with New England before Lance with the 49ers, both Lynch and Shanahan need to be escorted out of the Santa Clara building by security, and have all their belongings tossed in the street.

Just got finished watching every play this guy made in college. Here's why this guy will elevate this offense.
- His feel for the pocket is top notch. The guy naturally feels pressure and is extremely elusive in the pocket.
- On plays that aren't designed runs, Trey always looks to pass first. I saw multiple plays where the play was dead and done, but he Russel Wilsoned to huge chunk plays or touch downs.
- His deep ball is impeccable. It's too bad he was throwing to scrubs like 5'7 Phoenix Sproles.
- Kyle's play action will be even more lethal now because you have to account for Trey being able to pull it down and run.
- Cannon arm allows him to throw outs and across the grain with ease. We'll see a lot of plays where Kittle or Juice slips to the opposite site and Trey flicks it to them for a TD or huge chunk yards.

I know a lot of division rival forums are a little scared we took Lance so that must be the correct pick.

Maybe their scared that the since 49ers still have Garoppolo playing and Lance is raw and unproven, they are expected beat up on San Francisco. So have a lot of pressure.

That's a bit extreme.

49ers are 10-9 vs the West since Jimmy became the starting QB (7-4 when Jimmy plays). How is that getting beat up on?

Yeah, we don't need him tainting the message Shanahan wants him to be getting.

He'd be my number two choice behind Brian Hoyer.
