Kyle Shanahan divulges more Trey Lance nuggets..
— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) May 3, 2021
🏈 49ers were already trying to make the trade up in February (did on 3/26)
🏈 Lance's tape + personality deep dive equalled: "By the end it was a very easy decision."
🏈 Shanahan says 5 QBs were good enough for #12, but not #3 https://t.co/u0txIqZCz8

Don´t give unecessary motivation to another player and don´t put more pressure on your QB.
But that´s this Front Office M.O. They say nothing before the big moves. And then they´re candid with the press and explain their process.
Still everyone was the smarter QB this year so I guess it´s not that big of a problem.

He threw the ball 55 yards in the air with ease and hit the deep ball with very nice touch. He hit his receiver right in the hands. pic.twitter.com/MwfexmaA3u
Need to catch that!
Ridiculous arm strength.
Jimmy can't make that throw. He'd have to put everything he has into it to get it fifty. Accuracy would be out the window. That's how lethal Trey is. Any drop back is enough to get off a 45 yard + flick.

overall didn't see a ton of it...but young QBs can always improve on mechanics.

These are some of the throws that show real velocity...not a ton of dip quick release here
3rd and 8. Man coverage. Another Trey Lance far hash throw. pic.twitter.com/1LXgYjrtjN

Nice job climbing in the pocket and not dropping his eyes... far hash throw. Nice pic.twitter.com/ddSoA6Pbvf

We can add Trey Lance to the party. Far hash throw with terrific touch over the underneath defender pic.twitter.com/gAKtwS86EC

They saw somethings in his mechanics that actually hurt his velocity on many throws and they expect the ball to pop out even more.
rich scangarello probably working on it right now lol
Thank God. Was wondering where the flat footed, flick 60 yarder was. Good God. 😳😳😳😳The more I watch the tape the more I think this guy could start once he has the playbook down. Prodigy

I would like to point out that this is from his only 2020 game, the one everyone complains about as being so "horrible". Was it a perfect or good game? Nah not for Trey. However, had the receiver caught that ball, his stat line becomes like 16-30 for 200+ passing yards, 3 passing TDs, 150 or so yards rushing, and 2 rushing TDs. And they won the game.
That's his worst game.

Do you know if Lance's sometimes erratic throws in college correlate with poor footwork? I have been curious about that for at least five days now! Kyle did mention his level of QB technique coaching was basically getting them to set their feet up properly, and I wondered if he might have been thinkin about Lance when he mentioned it.
Kid was a 19 yr old when that tape was out...yes his feet were a little erratic which lead to some placement issues. The great thing is that is totally correctable especially for someone that wasn't some 4 yr starter and throwing the ball a certain way all through college.
You can just watch clips from him working out and both pro days over the past 5+ months and see how great his feet look.
...
There's some film of great footwork, just wasn't polished which is totally understandable...he's a pup. Allen had bad footwork and Mahomes had krusty the clown feet coming out of Texas Tech lol
You have probably answered that a few dozen times but thanks for doing it again. The part about not having deeply ingrained bad habits is a huge point, and also a reason to bring him along slowly if possible. Not experienced with QBs at all but with runners of all types mechanical issues are best addressed first at a standstill to gain understanding of which muscles to fire and what things like your feet should feel like, then transitioning slowly through faster and faster movements once things become habit. You go faster in very short bits so you can focus on feeling and controlling what is happening. Do it, analyze, correct, repeat, and stop if you are doing it wrong. The basic concept has to hold true for QBs learning skills as well. Hopefully Lance is far enough along to where the mechanics are consistently correct while not thinking about them.

I also don't remember the game very well either - it was a long time ago but looking strictly at the statistics - he was 11 for 26 in that Boise game but gashed them in the run game. I am sure he missed quite a few easy throws if he was 11 for 26. Will have to check it out again once I reach home.
Like I said - I think accuracy is an issue with Lance - but in my personal opinion - it is way overblown. He was also playing with really poor WRs who often ran bad routes. It's really difficult to judge if the throws were off or if the route was off.
This is obviously just the highlights, so it doesnt show the bad throws, but Id say Kaep looked like a quarterback in his first start:

Id even argue he looked more impressive than Lance with some of those throws. Anyway, here's hoping Lance intelligence, work ethics and working under Kyle will make him elite. One huge plus he has over Kaep is that his release isn't a molasses one.

The things he lacks abit right now you can only improve by playing. He needs reps. He had around 300 throws in college. Rookies that should sit year 1 are rookies who have a hard time in the huddle, proccessing, decision making, stuff like that. That's not an issue with Trey. All the stuff he needs to get better at he can only get better at by playing.
On his highlights his accuracy is phenomenal. Not sure what is being looked at???????

I know Lance has a lot to learn and only time will tell if he works out but I definitely have that feeling of excitement back. This is our chance to have another great QB that can play here for several years. I just hope it works out. It would be nice to have a QB that strikes fear into the opposing team.
