Steve, as he has stated before, not every situation is different. It's all the same. If your good enough you will claw your way out. It's the same situation for all. He said he learned more from his first 2-14 season as a QB then any other. The season sucked but he knew he belonged and that was the most important lesson. He knew he could be an NFL QB despite the horrible first season.
When asked about potential injury for inexperienced player he said then don't play football. Go find another day job.
I completely agree and happy Jimmy played well yesterday but really ready for this situation to be bedded. Let Trey "claw" himself out. Take the lumps. Tell himself I will be an NFL QB with success and let's roll.
Every situation is different because every QB learns at a different rate and every QB comes in with different degrees of experience thus some learning curves will be much steeper than others.
While he is one who may claim to have benefitted from playing early, others have said the exact opposite (like Mahomes). We have seen guys both who played early and who sat, share opinions that contradict Steve's viewpoint.
We also have seen coaches sit their rookies and literally claimed they were not ready. Just because he believes it worked for him doesn't mean it necessarily works for everyone.
A few things, and I put all the blame on Kyle, John, and whoever was involved in trading what we did for Trey:
his inexperience is unrivaled. There's never been a qb drafted anywhere near this high with as little experience as Trey has.
We have no idea if he can play in the NFL or not: he has started one year since his high school days. He was not good enough after high school to get any big time offers at the position.
So, he *would be a great candidate to sit, and be eased into the league. Howevah, if he sits this year, that puts him at 1 year playing starting qb since hs, in South Dakota, in like 5 years. Not to mention, how many seasons did he start at qb in high school?
No one can argue that he needs snaps, now, and lots of them.
Buuuut, this is a win now roster, with a qb who took them to a super bowl. Try telling Trent Williams, or The vets that they are putting ting this year away. Because, no matter what you think, going from JG to Trey would be waiving the flag on this year.
Finally, to compound that issue, we have no 1st round pick so cannot afford to win 5 games this year.
In summation, the FO tried to thread a needle between competing now and setting themselves up for the future and it's blowing up in their face. They compounded this by blowing the next 4 picks as well.
My take/solution: count the picks as a sink cost, ride Jimmy out this year or until he gets hurt, go for broke to win every game possible. If JG get hurt or becomes unplayable, go to Trey and never look back. Dump Jimmy in the off-season for what you can and rebuild your offense around Treys strengths, which are way different than Jim's. So good luck
