This is an insanely odd take.

What do you think him staying at NDSU for another season does for his NFL development? You think suddenly he gets a ton more pass attempts? And then somehow improves his draft stock from #3 overall which puts him on a better team(although I guess how good our team was may have been an over estimation)

There is very little to gain for him by staying for another season and a lot to lose. Him sitting and learning with Shanahan as HC is still better than what he'd get by staying at NDSU. He already got that offense down pat.

However, it's been a great year for them and a very tough one for those who thought Jimmy was a franchise QB or that we would take Jones.

Nope. Everyone already knew pre draft Garoppolo was a lame duck QB this year and Jones is already light years better than the mobile QB's. But that too was expected.

There are people here who believe Trey will be traded next year and Jimmy extended.

Jones does not play how Joe played. You're gonna talk about people not watching Joe and say this? LMAO. Joe was NIMBLE. He was fast for the position. He threw with better ball placement and more beautiful spirals. I mean, about all they have in common is that they were good in the pocket.

EDIT -- like for real? Jones isn't doing this, bro:

I feel like a lot of people who are acting like Jones is Montana or the best rookie they've seen haven't actually watched closely.

He's done nothing shocking given his pedigree entering the draft. Everyone knew he should be a guy who plays at his best early on. That's why I had no issues with us taking him with our original pick because he was a slight upgrade over Jimmy, with a rookie salary to work around and no injury history.

But when you're going all in for a franchise QB then you need a guy who can elevate the play around him and someone who has a large ceiling to work towards. Jones floor and ceiling are inches apart.

Yes he's accurate, yes he has very good mechanics and yes he's got a great grasp on the Pats offense quickly. Honestly I don't know if there's a better move for a Bama player than going to the Pats. Belichick and Saban are pretty much bffs and Pats use Bama as a minor league club for them.

But when you watch the Pats there are very few big time throws that Jones has made when guys aren't wide open. Now kudos to him that he's finding the open guys but eventually you play a defense which defends well and you have to make some tough contested throws and he's shown very few of those so far. Maybe he improves but eventually his physical limitations will get to him.

While I agree to an extent, people need to stop saying Jones' ceiling is so low. Sure, it's true that he's never going to be that great at avoiding a rush or threatening defenses with his legs, but there's still world's of improvement he can make from the pocket. Seeing things faster, throwing with more consistent accuracy, improving his pocket awareness, and so on. Jones' ceiling is Drew Brees, and Drew Brees is going to get a gold jacket.

Both make great points. I tend to agree with Alex. Also, Steve young is the reason I am a niners fan, but man do I think he's not great on the air. I'd way rather listen to Alex l. I think he will be great in TV

PS. Sorry couldn't get it to embed.

Good watch! Personally I think starting a 21 year old Alex ruined his potential to be something better. He was young and dumb and putting the entire franchise on his back at that age was stupid. Now some can obviously handle it but not all these guys a programmed the same. To the point if Trey. Him sitting for a year is not going to hurt a thing or him coming in if Jimmy doesn't get it done the pressure is far less

Like Alex said the organization has put a lot of stock in these guys, why force them if they are not ready? Treys time will come. If not this year, very soon.

Dumb? Alex has never been remotely close to dumb. What do you mean by that? Alex is borderline genius.

He'll be more than ready to start next year, assuming he gets more playing time this year.

Not bettin the farm om it.

You ought to. His game in Arizona and half a game in Seattle was not even that much worse than Jimmy has done for most of the quarters he's played this season. If you artificially restrict it to pocket passing, he's a lot further behind. But he was moving the ball against the best team in the league despite penalty after penalty after penalty backing the offense up. And yes, his scrambling ability was part of why, and it's why he is in fact NOT that far behind Jimmy at all, in terms of the offense moving the ball.

Sure, but Brees doesn't sniff a gold jacket without Payton, and McDaniels is nowhere near the schemer/playcaller he is.

You gotta be kidding me.

I'm gonna need to see evidence of that. We could all use the LOL's.

awwwh,...genus still mad at me for saying Jimmy's arm strength in the yellow direction isin't superior. A strong-armed QB pick later and he still can't simply admit that hey, maybe his take was a fail.

NY has came around since then but genus is still protesting my old stance on Jimmy,...even when the team was doing great.

This was even made for genus since our Super Bowl run and it's been hurt feelings ever since.

I said that Jimmy's arm strength is not optimal for easy throw aways on broken plays.

But maybe I'm wrong? Look at his throw charts last year and this year (NextGen). Who here thinks Jimmy's proven his arm strength is just fine in the yellow direction?

There is a reason he's always had a hard time with untimely sacks and not just throwing the ball away when in danger: it's arm strength.
Jimmy's just not too great at throws in the yellow direction,...and so we've drafted Trey.

"Well, I'm never going to argue quarterbacking with Joe Montana," Lynch told KNBR's "Murph and Mac." "But I can tell you this, we are extremely confident in Trey Lance and what he is going to be. I think we have seen glimpses of that. We're taking our time, you know? Because we have another quarterback who we believe in in Jimmy. But it's also about putting Trey in the best possible situation. Mac's playing right now so I can understand why Joe said that, but we studied that hard. We made our decision. We're still as convicted as ever that we made the right decision there. ... He's entitled to his own opinion. We'll always respect that but we've got a ton of belief in Trey Lance that he is going to be a tremendous player for us for a long time."

I mean maybe the person I remember saying something like that doesn't believe it anymore. It was months ago (and I don't remember who it was, but I know it was one of the people whose Jimmy following is more of a, shall we say, cult following.

All I want to know is, did he believe in Trey as much as Kinlaw's medicals?

Whomever said that would have to be either a family member or cult leader.
