What does Trey look like? He can't even learn the playbook in half a season. He can't start. He doesn't even play. Kyle doesn't even trust him on gadget plays anymore. Like 3rd and 1 and goal line.

From all reports - Trey has learned the whole playbook, already.

This was my problem with Trey. Supposedly he was this football savant who despite his experience would be pro ready. In the little time he has had, he looked skittish and had no idea what was happening in front of him.

Let me explain this in a way that someone at your level of genius will get.

Actually, let me start with a substitute teacher. A very wise man, a very famous man:

Trey knew the playbook in TRAINING CAMP, per Kyle Shanahan. And per every piece of scouting information about his intelligence and work ethic.

Say you've never swam before. If I told you how to do it, are you ready to go upstream in the Gore Rapids in the Colorado River? No I don't think so. Knowing how the mechanics of how swimming works isn't the same thing as having the kinetic experience and muscle memory. It's the very same thing with QBing, except you're having to deal with the speed of defenders, the constantly evolving ways to disguise coverage, and all of these things that can only be learned one way: experience. No amount of knowledge of the playbook is going to prepare you with how quickly holes collapse in the NFL.
When Bill Walsh took over he had a QB named Steve DeBerg. Steve passed for over 3600 yards in his 2nd season with Walsh. Steve wasn't terrible but Walsh wanted more. He probably could have won with Deberg if he has stuck with him but he wanted something that DeBerg didn't have. That was the intangibles that great QBs possess. He originally wanted Steve Fuller from Clemson but KC drafted him in the 1st round. Lucky for the Niners. Fuller had a terrible career. The Niners didn't have a first round pick so Walsh took James Owens with his first pick and Montana in the 3rd with his second pick. Owens was a total bust and Montana had a decent career

I bring this up because in spite of playing at Notre Dame Joe didn't come in and start in his first season. He started getting some playing time in his second season but didn't become the starter until year 3. I think we at least owe Trey one season before we start bashing him. He has to not only learn and feel comfortable with the system but he needs to get the feel for playing again after sitting out last year. If he's struggling at the end of next year or in year 3 then it's time to start doubting him.
The only concern I have with Trey is his accuracy

If that doesn't improve he won't reach his full potential

He has the arm strength, mobility and mental stuff in my opinion to be great. He also has the work ethic and drive to get better.

He needs reps and non stop off-season work on mechanics to reach his potential
Mac Jones!

Yep. He's got everything else. If he improves the accuracy, the other stuff, like recognizing what a defense is doing post-snap, will come.

He has absolutely no idea what is going on. We traded 25 picks for him. Plus 10 1st rounders.

Any chance the two of you drive around in a car that looks like a dog?

I am at the point where I no longer want to see him play this season. Throwing a rookie into the games now essentially means that our season is over. I was of the belief (and still am), that if we would have made Trey the starter earlier, that him playing down the stretch WOULDNT have meant the season was over, and by this time we would still be able to win with him. But since he hasnt had really any time as our QB1 and we are 11 weeks into the season, it would be silly to throw him in there now and hope to win.

However I will say this. If we stick with Jimmy for the duration of the season, WE BETTER make the damn playoffs. If we dont make the playoffs, AND Trey doesnt get experience, this will have been a wasted season.

Joe wasn't full-time until year 3 but at Notre Dame, he played in some big games against elite opponents.

vibes of the Alex Smith era... not good enough, not bad enough.. but we still get screwed in the end

What if Jimmy plays well, but the team loses and is 5-8? I'd like to see Lance. Any game experience is good experience imo.

How Jimmy plays is irrelevant to me in terms of this specific conversation. If we are 5-8, then its Trey time, even if Jimmy is lighting it up. I would qualify 5-8 as the season being over.

What I was saying is that as long as we keep winning, I am down for Jimmy to start. What I am not down for is Jimmy to keep playing because "he is the best QB we have currently" if its not coming with wins and a playoff berth. Trey needs reps. The reason I would be good with him not getting them is if we are winning. If the wins go away, Jimmy needs to also, so we can get our rookie QB ready for next season.

You don't give up that many picks for a player who lacks accuracy. You pick the accurate player.
I think we picked the biggest long shot project. Not always the best thing. I see the other QB's starting, progressing and even winning. There were certainly other guys more ready to go and more proven. More accuracy too.

I just want to see the kid progress. Right now I'm not seeing it. I see the other guys doing it.

Locker was a big project IMO.
