while removing a 27 million dollar weight from around our neck.. jimmy served a purpose in the aftermath of jt and chip. but we have seen his limitations. ceiling plus he gets hurt all the damn time... we now need to actually move forward and try get over the hump. i do not know if trey is the answer but after a few years. a super bowl loss and a disgraceful loss to the rams... i know its not jimmy

And the fact they gave Sudfeld $2 million guaranteed. You don't give your 3rd string QB guaranteed money.

I don't think 2 million is necessarily that big of an investments for sudfield but I also don't remember what we paid Mullens and beathard when we had 3 qbs. But I agree that much guaranteed money implies that Sudfield is most likely the back up.

For me Jimmy saying goodbye is a huge indicator. I don't think he would play for us next season even if it was up to him at this point. I think he's done and ready to move on. And so are the 49ers. We have our future at QB and everyone knows it. It's time to see what that future looks like.
In my opinion, we gotta go with Trey Lance at this point. We invested too much draft capital for Trey to have him sit for another year. Sure, in a perfect world, you give a guy as much development time to max him out... but we're also a contending team with a couple veterans who might not be around in a few years. Gotta push while we still have this championship window open with this roster.

There's a lot of extreme views on his readiness, and it's not surprising. He only played two games---the first was early in the season when he was still pretty raw... and the second was late in the season, against one of the weaker teams in the league. Against the Texans, he started slow, but had a solid second half.

I'll say this--I think Jimmy Garoppolo is a solid QB. He definitely has a better command of the offense than Trey Lance. But in the playoffs, he only had to make a couple plays here and there. Our defense and run game was strong enough to carry him. So, I think that unless Trey is really behind on his development, we can afford to start him and still compete on Sundays. He'll take his lumps, but I'm sure he'll also improve as the season goes on.
What's up with his throwing mechanics? Is there any videos out there of him working on it? It seems like that has been the main goal this off-season, from what players and coaches have talked about.

He's had almost two and a half years to get things tightened up. IIRC he spent all of 2020 working on being a pro and improving his mechanics. Then had plenty of time in 2021 to continue this progress by being a back up. Now, he's been working with some QB gurus. That's a lot of time to improve.

Can't wait to see some improvement. I'm tired of seeing other fans clown his throwing motion. Even my family (not immediate) that are raiders or cowboy fans trash his throwing motion, talking about high throws and wobblers.
Cant even get excited around them when talking about Lance because they say he's not even an actual passing QB. Can't wait for him to prove them wrong.

I'm fine with the throwing motion...maybe tighten it up a little but most QB guys say his throwing motion is more than fine. He has quick hands so the ball still get out fast regardless of any "longer" motion.

He's gotta work on his lower half and be consistent there. JTO said he can be a little heel clicky. It's all about that footwork and that will make him more accurate/consistent. One of the guys he's working with his Tom House who's the godfather of throwing mechanics. Lance seems like a grinder so I'm not worried about him putting the work in.

Tbh, I don't have a problem with his throwing motion if it gets where it needs to be and is accurate. That's all I care about. Shoot, Phillip Rivers throwing motion was awful but at the end of the day, he got the job done.

Maybe, like you mentioned, getting his base set more consistently will improve some of his overthrows.

His throwing motion doesn't come across as egregious to me but that's all I hear from opposing fans when discussing Lance. It's tiresome. Then we have our own players like Deebo or coaches talking about him working on that first in order to become what we all believe he can become...Am like what?? That's two and a half years to work on that. I don't see how much more he can improve on that this off-season. Hopefully, Tom House can work his magic.

I've seen that several times. I was looking for off-season QB drills. Would like to see a glimpse into his workouts aimed at improving throwing mechanics.

On a side note, I kinda of miss the Gruden camp leading up to the draft, that showed some of those QB drills aimed at improving mechanics.

They are keeping a lid on those for sure.
Too bad about Gruden.

If anyone has questions about Christian Watson, his dad is on twitter.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of Lance 3D data from 2019 to now.

Lance's throwing motion isn't... broken. I think that's an extreme viewpoint that people have when they say he needs to work on it.
But yeah, he can stand to really refine it, and he will.
But refining throwing motion is something QB's work on every offseason. So expect/hope it's tighter, and then he'll work on it every year.

I'm very excited to see how he looks Week 1. He's a grinder and is reportedly supposed to be a great learner... so am hoping to see a greatly improved Lance in Week 1.

Yeah, I don't see awful mechanics. It's a little elongated, but also not as bad as Kap. I think he can tighten it up a bit and work on his base, though.

But, whenever Lance is discussed outside of niner land, that is the first thing people mention. Like he is a broken QB that needs a complete overhaul.

Then you have Deebo and coaches emphasizing lance improve on his mechanics to become the elite quarterback everyone is expecting him to be. So, idk...

Im excited as you are to see what he's been cookin this whole time. Lance has had two and a half years to build himself up even more than what saw in 2019. I expect to see some excellence next year.
