Definitely. Jimmy was just one step below Tier 1 (just my opinion). He was able to get the 49ers into a super bowl, just not win it. Most super bowl QB's are much more durable than Jimmy, also. Those injuries, I think, has eroded his physical talents - not that he's had great mobility either. Both Joe and Steve were much more mobile than Jimmy. Joe and Steve had great deep ball accuracy, and Joe could throw outside the hashmarks, just not past 20+ yards downfield regularly. That wasn't his game. But Joe - when he threw the deep ball - there was basically nobody around Jerry because he's looked them off. Like you said, Jimmy is a good QB, maybe with a bit more time and him devoting more time to his mechanics - maybe get above where he is at, but I don't think he'll reach tier 1 any time soon.
I'm excited for Trey. His mindset and attitude reminds me a bit of Joe and Steve. Joe would stay after practice and throw with Dwight, and Joe would actually get into training camp early and throw with the rookies when he didn't have to. Joe also would take his OLine to dinner - something I'm sure Trey will do at some point once the OLine is established. Trey is already doing a lot of those things.
just below tier 1? Nah . Starting caliber yes. That's a very subjective thing to discuss anyway.
yeah I think Jimmy is who he is and has had the luxury of being on a couple good rosters with top end coaching staffs. Regardless I wish him well and thank him for being part of making this team watachable and relevant again.
Agree to disagree on Jimmy.
But I agree with you and I am also very appreciative of Jimmy and what he brought to the 49ers. He's brought some great leadership, no drama. Loved the way he came, threw, and left without making a splash and distract Trey and the team. His great leadership allowed a lot of wins to come his way. I think he'll continue to win on another team, but I foresee more injuries for him unfortunately -- that will limit him more and more as time goes on.
