Some of the "weirdness" with evaluations as Mahomes sees it...
Patrick Mahomes has taken notice of the "weird" criticisms that he and other Black quarterbacks in the NFL have received lately.
Though he didn't want to say that Black quarterbacks are evaluated differently than their white counterparts, Mahomes thinks the comments that he, Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray have gotten this week are strange.
"Obviously, the Black quarterback has had to battle to be in this position that we are to have this many guys in the league playing," Mahomes said Friday, KSHB's Aaron Ladd. "I think every day, we're proving that we should have been playing the whole time. We've got guys that can think just as well as they can use their athleticism.
"It's always weird when you see guys like me, Lamar [Jackson], Kyler [Murray] kind of get that on them when other guys don't. But at the same time we're going out there to prove ourselves every day to show we can be some of the best quarterbacks in the league."

I just don't get the uproar personally. Damn near all QBs who deserved their criticisms got them. Including white ones. Dilfer, Flacco, Cutler, Sanchez, Quinn, Locker, Darnold, Daniel Jones, Mayfield, Alex Smith, Jimmy G., Trubisky, Goff, Wentz, Narita, Bortles,, Weeden, Gabbert, Tebow, JP Losman, Joey Harrington, Tim Couch, Grossman,Boller. I can keep going.
It's not just black QBs who get criticized. They're just usually the only ones complaining.
As for the why's.... Black QBs are usually the best athletes on the field from little league to at least college. Often times even college. So they can get by on their athleticism and they don't so much get by playing QB the most traditional of ways. Whereas for the white QBs to get to the NFL they have to do it the more traditional way so it's easier to see it translate. So the black QBs may be more intelligent than given credit for (as far as football intelligence) they don't always show it because they're not as accustomed to having to compared to the white QB.
Over the years a lot of the black QBs admitted to not watching a lot of film. So why is it so surprising that their football intelligence is questioned.
Mora mentioned to Vick that the Falcons used to send Vick home with DVDs of game film, and Vick admitted that he never bothered to watch them.
"The DVDs would pile up in my car, Jim," Vick told his old coach.↵
"Let's talk Colin preparing for games. And you know how they get iPads now. And they regulate, and they can watch how much film you watch. [Blaine] Gabbert, when he was a backup, was watching four to five times as much film as Colin was."
Murray said back in 2021 that he could visualize what was going on during games thanks to great cognitive skills. So he didn't feel a need to watch a lot of extra film.
Ninkovich said, "From what I gained from sources inside the actual building, from everything I understand now, Mac was basically helping Cam learn the playbook."
