No where does it say they were considering Mac lol

Shanahan was asked to name the second quarterback.

"Mac," the 49ers coach responded. "Yeah, Mac Jones and Trey. Those were the two guys that we were locked in on from the beginning, and if we never moved up to [No. 3], we would have never had the chance to learn more about Trey. That was the hardest thing. You've got to be so sneaky and stuff when you're back there because you don't want people hopping in front of you, and I had a very strong feeling people were going to hop in front of us.

Agree, and I'll just add that it was a very strange year. 2020 to 2021 was a covid year. I think if Trey would have been in the 2022 draft, he'd easily be the number 1 pick in the draft considering the QB crop in 2022. I think Covid helped keep Trey under wraps - in a sense - because his 2020 to 2021 season was non-existent because of covid. That helped drop his stock because he was so raw. If he had a second season like he had in 2019 to 2020, (the next year) - I think he and Trevor Lawrence would be the first and second pick in the draft.

I agree, Giedi.
Who gives a sh*t. They took Trey, and he is the QB.
Who gives a f**k about who they might have liked or could have drafted….like some in here always say, It's about the results. Which was drafting Lance.

let's move on.

Lol you like to talk about "results" not what ifs…you use it all the time in here. Results of that draft was Lance. Period. No one cares anymore

I don't expect the Packers to have all their starters in there, but they are going to be really good on defense this year. I believe there are projected 7 former 1st picks starting.

Middlekauff and Guy were at the practice yesterday and talked about his speed. They said from what they saw he looks faster than last yr, not as hesitant.

Hopefully it translates to the games.

From that I take that Kyle was looking to move up to get Mac at three and decided to check out Lance since he was now on the table and liked him better.

Nope. I got he was comfortable with Mac at 12 but to get a good look at Lance he knew he had to move up so he could look at him without hiding and then he got his guy

Everyone knew we didn't have to move up to three and give what we did to get Mac Jones

That was a draft day trade at best. That move up in terms of talent and game breaking ability was for Trey Lance or Justin Fields both of whom went predictably before Mac Jones

That's how I interpreted it as well. He would've been ok with Mac at 12 but the temptation of a Lance or a Fields (or maybe even Wilson) was too much to for them not to try and trade up and really evaluate all the options without having to be so secretive about it. It's interesting to hear Shanahan talk about it but nothing more.

You guys are in denial.

You don't move up to #3 just to take a look at a guy. You don't trade 2 firsts to look at a guy. Fields was never in the conversation. Shanny said it was always Mac and Lance.

They moved up because they didn't want to get leap frogged on Mac. Thats clear. Once they leapfrogged then they had an opportunity to evaluate trey.

Why is this so complicated. Just accept it.

Well he only brought up being leap frogged when he specifically mentioned Lance. Either way, nobody knows 100% one way or the other besides Shanahan & probably Lynch. It's all just how you want to interpret his comments and speculation at this point. I'm not denying that they still had serious interest in Mac, even at #3 if they still thought he was the best option after the trade up. Really not a big deal either way, we went with Lance so that's what matters.
I 1000% believed from the beginning that Shanny was all in on Mac and was persuaded off of him. Now with these comments and Lynch's comments when he expressed he was surprised when Kyle said Trey only solidifies it for me.

None of that matters. As NY said, we took Trey time to root for him and move on.
kyle did his due diligence and chose trey

I don't care whether he runs 4.5 or 4.6 or whatever. I'm more concerned about pocket awareness and the quickness to evade the pass rush and extend plays. That top end speed only comes into play when he takes off and runs which I hope we don't see too often. That makes for a nice highlight but they're going to win with Trey throwing passes to Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle.

I remember many of us saying he may have traded up with Mac in mind, but wanted a look at Trey/Fields and.. well in hindsight it was a very logical and rational approach. Lets hope Trey kicks some serious ass!
