"So, officially this Monday, Kyle and I kind of tied it, put a bow on it, and said, 'This is where we're going.' We did that, and I believe it was Wednesday when we told Jed, I think," Lynch said in response to a question from NBC Sports Bay Area's Jennifer Lee Chan. "He'll tweet it out here. But yeah, we let him know on Wednesday and that was the extent of it"

Monday meaning 3 days before the draft is when they finally made the decision. They informed York the day before on Wednesday. I think Mac was a lot closer than many care to believe. Regardless I don't get the drama.

Nope. I got he was comfortable with Mac at 12 but to get a good look at Lance he knew he had to move up so he could look at him without hiding and then he got his guy

Everyone knew we didn't have to move up to three and give what we did to get Mac Jones

That was a draft day trade at best. That move up in terms of talent and game breaking ability was for Trey Lance or Justin Fields both of whom went predictably before Mac Jones

That's how I interpreted it as well. He would've been ok with Mac at 12 but the temptation of a Lance or a Fields (or maybe even Wilson) was too much to for them not to try and trade up and really evaluate all the options without having to be so secretive about it. It's interesting to hear Shanahan talk about it but nothing more.

Agree, I'll just add that Covid19 prevented them from meeting in person (to a certain extent) so paying that extra first round pick was necessary to enable them to do their due diligence in working out all 3 (Fileds, Lance. Mac) without someone jumping in front of them and taking the best of the three (in their eyes). It was a weird year - scoutingwise.

Middlekauff and Guy were at the practice yesterday and talked about his speed. They said from what they saw he looks faster than last yr, not as hesitant.

I don't care whether he runs 4.5 or 4.6 or whatever. I'm more concerned about pocket awareness and the quickness to evade the pass rush and extend plays. That top end speed only comes into play when he takes off and runs which I hope we don't see too often. That makes for a nice highlight but they're going to win with Trey throwing passes to Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle.

Its going to be important in the beginning as he goes through is passer growing pains. He can tap into that speed skillet to buy time and get out of trouble. Eventually he'll (hopefully) be like Steve Young who rarely had to run because he was such an efficient passer.

Stop being so insecure bro
He's also innaccurate at times and tends to miss at least one open running back in the flat per day -- today he airmailed Sermon once. That's why the 49ers will call lots of runs for Lance this season. Today, they called four quarterback runs for him. He also scrambled a couple times. Don't be surprised when Kyle Shanahan calls runs on 3rd down to set up 4th and short. He did it today.

I know I'm in the minority but I hate all the designed runs. Even with the argument that "he can also get hurt in the pocket", you are only putting more chances out that he gets concussed or pulls something. I understand that we drafted him to use his mobility but I think running him just to run him is asking for trouble. Don't get me wrong obviously there are plenty of times his running will get us big plays and possibly open things up but all it takes is one wrong move then these SB caliber team is stick going with Sudfeld who I have zero confidence in..

While people questioned his readiness to start last year based on his limited experience I don't think there has been a lot of sentiment out there to suggest people don't want him to succeed, outside of that one guy who was all in on the team picking Mac Jones. Why also would you make the assumption that people who supported Jimmy's continued tenure as the starting QB last year now make up the core of an "anti Trey" component? Again, I have seen very few posters in here actively rooting for Lance to fail but rather are just taking a wait an see attitude.

What I have seen is the opposite though where people constantly rip on Jimmy as if that is their sole reason for existing. Jimmy always gave his best and when he was healthy enough to get through most of the season helped get the team to two NFC Championship games. I have never understood the hate that he inspires among some posters in here for all of the contributions he made to the team. All I can figure is that, at its core, it's all about this sort of phony sense of entitlement that some 'fans" have abut this team. "Oh, well we had Joe and Steve, so we DESERVE and want only HOF QB's on our roster nothing else will do". Oh, please, get over it.

Like many people I was proud of the team's unbeaten Super Bowl record and that loss to Baltimore is one of the many reasons I have always been down on the Harbaugh/Kaepernick experience. That was a winnable game and they failed to get it done. But that ship has sailed. There is no way for the team to go back to being unbeaten so now, like every other team in the league, they are out there competing to get back to the big game and get another trophy. People seem to forget that Joe wasn't always able to get the team over the hump and that Steve lost two straight NFC Championship games to the Cowboys, in large part because of his own mistakes. If social media had been a thing back then I don't have the slightest doubt that he would have gotten completely excoriated for those losses and that "fans" would have been calling for his head. But now he is a generally admired part of a storied past. But Jimmy misses a throw that could have made a difference amidst the team's utter defensive collapse in the last 10 minutes of the game and it becomes an unforgivable sin for some. Whatever, The team decided it was time to try something new and hopefully Trey will give everyone plenty of reasons to get behind him. Go Niners!

Yup it was a great post 81 you said nothing wrong..

He said nothing wrong? He literally contradicted himself really badly. Doesnt understand the hate for Jimmy (who failed to get it done in a winnable Superbowl and a winnable NFCCG), but hates Kaepernick/Harbaugh because they failed to get it done in a winnable Superbowl?

Laughable logic, 49erFaithful6, laughable.

Don't understand hate for any of them.
if Trey becomes a good quarterback, but doesn't win a Bowl the next 5 years, do you hate him.

I agree. If Kyle is going to run Trey on all kinds of designed runs the team may as well keep Jimmy cause we're going to need him. Running backs have short careers for a reason.
I am excited to see Trey become part of the running game. He brings another dimension to the offense and forces defenses to account for him. I don't want to see him run it 10+ times a game or anything but the threat does need to be there. Hopefully he is becoming more refined on knowing when to run it and when to hand it off on those RO's. If we can add in the play action, motion, and jet sweeps onto those RO's and RPO's, this offense could become very deadly. Especially now that defenses also have to account for the deep ball. I can see Trey and Kyle keeping DC's up late every night trying to account for everything that could potentially be thrown at them on game day.

The Shanahan cult now has the perfect excuse if Trey goes bust:

"Mac was always his first choice; he was forced by Lynch / Jed / Paraag to draft Lance."

Exactly... Especially our running backs lol. Again I understand running is a huge upside and adds another dimension with him but we have always ran the ball just fine without gimmicks.

I am not in favor of a ton of designed runs. In order to keep the defense honest / take advantage of defensive looks? Absolutely. But that Arizona game was hard to watch. And I am fairly certain the OL don't want him diving into the back of their legs constantly.
