I already consider it a failure because he wasn't able to take the job from Jimmy G when two opportunities were dropped in his lap last season. Three 1sts should get you a year 1 starter that can beat out an average at best QB like Jimmy G. And before anyone says "they weren't real chances!!" You can't tell me if Trey looked fantastic for a full game that Shanny wouldn't have "gone with the hot hand"... you just know he would have. 70% completion rate, good reads, 2-3TDs and no interceptions and it would have been his job. But he looked lost and played below average.

It was definitely a failure that they spent that kind of capital and didn't get an immediate impact when they were so close to getting the ultimate prize. You just have to maximize these contending years because they don't last with very few exceptions.

Playing QB in the NFL is very difficult. Give him a half season and see if the game starts to slow down a bit. Then look for incremental improvement with dips along the way.

There have been a number of good young QBs that entered the league on fire and that has raised the bar for Lance. It's fine to expect that but if that isn't Lance's career path then we can only hope he's a quick study. Let him learn.
He also just took the starting gig from Jimmy.

Seems pretty silly to target a developmental player as a means to lower a starting position's salary. One of the many very questionable lines of thought behind his selection.

And you're talking realistically about only a couple seasons because if he turns out the way we all hope, it's not like they aren't paying him a s**t ton at the end of his rookie deal. He'll get a great deal even if he isn't an elite quarterback provided he's trending in the right direction.

When asked why he's moving on to Trey, Kyle just simply says, "It's because we have to. Because of the contract".

Yeah so either its just coach speak, or you can just take it for what it is.

I believe it. Just questioning the decision making process in applying it to a multi-year project QB.

Young2Rice is right. What does Martz know about football?

this is the same Mike Martz that let Jay Cutler take seven step drops behind the worst o-line and just about got him killed.

Also the same Martz who hand picked JT O'Sullivan to be the Niners QB.

Hand picked is a bit of a stretch, lol. He didn't build the roster. Also the other QBs were Alex Smith (who eventually went on IR) and Shaun Hill. Not exactly a great QB room.

No one was expecting Mahomes or Allen yesterday. No need to make stuff up lol

ya dude, no one said he needs to literally be a combo of mahomes and allen , it was an exaggeration based off of niner fans ridiculous expectations of him.

great observation man, way to see the point lol 👍

You say exaggeration, but all I see is a straw man.

They will have to make the switch to Jimmy G. They aren't going anywhere with Trey Lance.

When propaganda meets reality.

Just watched this. Holy s**t Martz is drunk 😂

Shaun Hill was the man!

Rank those QB's in order. Martz picked the worst one. Let's not pretend he's some QB guru.

He seems like he is mixing up what QB he is talking about in the 1st half of the video?

I think he had his shortcomings as a coach no doubt, but he's a Super Bowl winner as an assistant, a runner up as a HC, and an architect of one of the greatest offenses in NFL history. He knows some things.

I remember getting on the JTO bandwagon personally... even though it was obvious he wasn't good lol. I don't think Alex was a great fit for that system and although he clearly became a better QB than JTO, at that time it wasn't clear. You can fault Martz for not maximizing what he actually had I guess, though the team and staff overall was a joke, and my memory of that preseason is foggy. Shaun Hill wasn't good either.
