I still just don't understand. I was hoping to see Trey use his legs to move the pocket, play action bootlegs, etc. Not this.

We knew the option would be part of the plan as well. It just sucks that he got his foot rolled like that. My sister broke her ankle in a tug-of-war like that once. Kind of a freak injury.

People need to stop calling this a freak injury. Freak injuries occur when there is no contact. When you run into 300+ pound men on a consistent basis, there is nothing freak about it. They will break your bones.

An injury isn't unusual with contact. This specific injury needs things to line up to occur, in the specific moment of time your step and opposing pressure. Collide a half second later or earlier and it likely doesn't happen. That's what is freaky about it. It's certainly not a common injury like an ACL.

Montana's back injury and elbow injury were also on option runs, right? Brady's ACL? Palmer's ACL? Right? RIGHT?

Result of contact. The more contact he has the more likely something bad will happen. Contact happens in the pocket. You try like heck to avoid it. You don't volunteer your qb up the gut here you go take shots at him.. it's moronic beyond belief when you spend three years worth of picks on him.

This. Freak injuries are a result of no contact. Allowing 300+ pound men to consistently tackle you does not constitute a freak injury.

The Trey Lance project, IMO, is officially over. No way we can take an injured 'project' quarterback who will be coming back from a horrid injury (which will affect what was supposed to be one of his biggest strengths eg mobility) in his third year to play what will be in effect his rookie season.

There was nothing about Trey before this injury that made any of us think he was the next great football phenom. And certainly I wouldn't expect him to come back from this with added elusiveness, agility, etc. He's gonna need a long rehab, and then we're hoping that come year 4 or 5 after we drafted him he will be our franchise quarterback?

no thanks. Time to look elsewhere.

on insisting to call designed runs for him

when he got a first down earlier and everyone cheered, i told my brother "dude i dont like that, hes going to get hurt". and bam, gone for the year.
This injury really hurt i cant even put into words how sad i felt for Trey. I'm not going to blame anyone the injury happened it is what it is. All I'm going to say is i hope Trey handles everything this season as best he can from a mental state. I hope his rehab goes well and i hope come March this team actually shows a commitment to him by letting go of Jimmy and actually building a team around Trey. I personally don't feel the organization did a very good job of getting him ready to start. I hope they do a better job this offseason and i hope Kyle actually comes up with a different game plan on how a Trey Lance lead team will operate.

It's very highly likely he won't make it now. Major long shot.

Had to login after a year to say I knew this was gonna happen. Shanny a Clown. Firable offense how he has coached trey.

You do realize this could have happened on any play, a sack, a rollout, a broken play, he could have injured himself at home, on the practice field, when he's out and about, this isn't a fireable offense, ridiculous, people wanted this element, athletic QB, now we want Shanny gone? WTF? He'll be back(both) next year, this is like Dak's injury, if Dak can come back, so can Trey, his future isn't over, he can still be the franchise QB, people underestimate how far we've come with injuries, medicine, Bosa looks stronger than ever and he tore his ACL, to write Trey off is ridiculous.

Yeah I don't think you're understanding what's the real argument here.

No one should be saying that it's Kyle's fault that Trey got injured.

But you better believe he shoulders the blame for Trey's lack of experience/development. Trey needs to have building blocks for him in the passing game. All of these run calls weren't getting Trey better. Now it's two seasons where he's had very little building blocks and next season it will be an issue as well.

I don't want Kyle fired because you only fire someone if there's a chance to improve. That's clearly not the case rn. But Kyle has mishandled Trey's development very poorly if you ask me.

Nobody is asking you.

What in the world?

My heart is broken for this kid. And for the future of this team.

I was just looking through my pre game pictures of Trey...minutes later he's done for the year.

I will say the crowd was chanting, "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy!" so that was pretty dope.

The future of the team comment is what I was rolling my eyes at.

Future with Trey. He'll heal but you don't think this has a profound effect on our future here?

I think you are, again, immediately going to the worst case scenario

K.

Trey will be starting Week 1 next season, and likely in 2024 as well. To give up on him after four starts is foolishness beyond reason.

Or do you expect them to start Purdy next year with Lance backing him up?

And QBs in 2022 are gonna run option plays when they have that skill set. It's the way the league is moving, and I fully expect Lance to run his fair share in the years to come.

Yup.. last time I was aware a QB was gonna get injured right before it happened was RG3.. in his case they left him in a playoff game.. he was limping around and broadcasters said maybe he shouldn't be playing.. next thing you know.. basically a career ender. He was never the same.
I have so much to say about both sides attacking each other. Shanahan shouldn't have to defend the play call. Can we agree that it was a truly unfortunate play? That play could have been normal and Trey doesn't break his ankle just as easy. I feel so bad for him because I think he was ready to take off. I think we still win that game 27-7 anyway even with Trey. I also think we have to rally around old faithful Jimmy G with all our hearts. Any Trey fan that is pissed Jimmy is back in the lineup can EAD.

Niners first. This wasn't the situation we wanted, but it's what we got. Go Niners. Go Jimmy. Heal up Trey

It just seemed like there were too many of them. We passed the ball more once Jimmy came in. So we're we not passing because Kyle didn't trust Trey enough to pass? The offense certainly looked better when Jimmy was passing than when Trey was running the option.
