Trey doesn't strike me as a natural runner in the first place, I think that was Shanahan's biggest miscalculation. He's slight, runs high, not particularly elusive, not as agile and compact as Lamar or as stocky as Allen. Mobility will always be apart of his game, but having him run as much as he did was foolish and asking for trouble.
I think his real potential lies far more in his passing ability and his calm pocket awareness.
He is by no means elusive like a Kyler or even Russ. And I love the fact Russ slides.
In the end you have a young kid, who had his ankle crushed by a 345 pound man. It could have happened to anyone. I won't sit here and say I like how often you give Lance the choice to run (via RPO, etc.), but that's part of why he was drafted. You have to take the good with the bad.
That being said, even as far back as last year versus Arizona, I said I do not like how often Kyle puts Lance in harm's way. Last year agains't Arizona was egregious. But I understand why Kyle does it. I get that he is bringing Lance along slowly, and wants to put Lance in the best position to succeed. But by the start of next year, Lance will have played about five games in three years. And, he will be due to have his fifth year option picked up, and then a new contract the following year. That's a lot to be shown over the course of 2023 and 2024, especially given the fact Lance seems to be injury prone.
I say injury prone much in the same way I have with JG. I can't complain about JG's injuries and ignore Lance's. It sucks for the kid. It sucks for the 49ers.
