Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance Thread

Mobility will always be apart of his game, but having him run as much as he did was foolish and asking for trouble.

I think his real potential lies far more in his passing ability and his calm pocket awareness.

He is by no means elusive like a Kyler or even Russ. And I love the fact Russ slides.

In the end you have a young kid, who had his ankle crushed by a 345 pound man. It could have happened to anyone. I won't sit here and say I like how often you give Lance the choice to run (via RPO, etc.), but that's part of why he was drafted. You have to take the good with the bad.

That being said, even as far back as last year versus Arizona, I said I do not like how often Kyle puts Lance in harm's way. Last year agains't Arizona was egregious. But I understand why Kyle does it. I get that he is bringing Lance along slowly, and wants to put Lance in the best position to succeed. But by the start of next year, Lance will have played about five games in three years. And, he will be due to have his fifth year option picked up, and then a new contract the following year. That's a lot to be shown over the course of 2023 and 2024, especially given the fact Lance seems to be injury prone.

I say injury prone much in the same way I have with JG. I can't complain about JG's injuries and ignore Lance's. It sucks for the kid. It sucks for the 49ers.
Was keeping Jimmy G on the roster a stroke of genius or an act of resignation about your inexperienced QB?

It wasn't a stroke of genius. The timing, coupled with what both JL and KS have said prove that. It ended up being dumb luck. But it is wonderful news for the 49ers and JG. The 49ers will not have a terrible season due to having to rely on a typical backup QB, and JG will be able to showcase what he can do, instead of sitting on the bench.

Lance loses, in a bunch of ways. And that is so unfortunate for the kid.

And another season with no reps for Trey Lance and he won´t improve as a passer. Again.
Kyle is a moron on this one. There was no reason, week 2, to keep using your young project like that.
And then he had Jimmy at the end of the game do a QB power just like Trey. What is wrong with Kyle?
I´m so sad for this young kid. If Kyle didn´t believe in him as a passer, keep him on the bench another season but do not use him like that. Even Harbaugh wouldn´t have Kap run like that.
Imagine the kid. All of the offseason, all he heard was how he wasn´t ready, how he was going to be a bust. He wanted to show everyone that he could improve all season and lead this team to the PO. And then his own HC was his worst ennemy all along seemingly.
Lance is injury prone. 3 and 1/4 starts and two injuries, one season ending. He has done nothing special yet. By next year he will have forgotten to play football and will be a bust. I bet they trade him.

It's three isn't it? Knee + finger + ankle?

Trade him for what, though? I mean, any trade would be a massive loss for the 49ers given what they gave up to draft him. Trey is here for the foreseeable future.

Also, LOL at Lance "forgetting how to play football" over the course of the next year.

I mean - come on. That's just a dumb statement. Did Tua forget how to play football when his leg was torn up? Did Jimmy G forget how when he tore his ACL?

"Derp, derp, what's a field goal? Do I throw the ball FORWARD? Derp, I'm Bley Fance and I play squash. Blubber, blubber, when does I hit a grand slam?" <- apparently what happens when you break an ankle. (BTW, wrote that with Bill Burr's sarcastic "dumb person voice" that he does sometimes in mind. It reads best that way. )

He's not a huge dude and he's more elusively fast. He's mobile enough to outrun the fat boys on the dline not break a long one and take it to the house. Shanahan just ensured that this dude doesn't get the reps he desperately needs for another year. It's gonna be three years removed from his last full season of football by the time he's healthy enough to play again. That is a terrible start to your nfl career

So unfortunate and this will just slow his development as he needs game reps. Heal up young fella!

Any early word on a recovery timeline?

Its actually three injuries. He sprained his knee in the Arizona game last year. Finger, knee, ankle in very limited playing time. Seems more brittle than jimmy.

Need to know the exact extent of injury first.
Still just have a pit in my stomach and feel for the guy. When I love me some Jimmy I was really excited to see if this kid could be a super star and take the position to the top echelon.
What's worse a knee (ACL/MCL) injury or ankle injury? Is a broken ankle an Achilles injury? Or it's own separate thing? I'm thinking Trey can come back from a broken ankle much better than an ACL

Assuming no ligament damage probably not as bad as ACL which requires reconstruction of the ligaments. He'll need pins and screws in ankle but in my mind that's better than actually taking muscle and grafting it. But I'm no doctor
