He looked very good, on a very bad team, and we didn't lose a game in his starts in '17. He was set to be an unrestricted free agent and we were forced to pay him market value. He also tore his ACL in '18. I don't think you can seriously criticize that move now. I don't. I was excited. It was finally a tangible bright spot after some of the lowest points of this organization (at least in my lifetime).
Regardless, I do differentiate between Patrick Mahomes and Trey Lance as prospects. The difference in experience between the two coming out of college was massive. Mahomes played in the Big 12, and Trey Lance was an FCS level player. Just like Josh Allen, to me if you compare Patrick Mahomes' play in college to Lance's, they look worlds apart.
I also think there's a solid argument that the Chiefs should have played Mahomes in '17. It was well reported from inside the Chiefs building how great he looked, and they couldn't get past the divisional round for years with Alex.
Only the basic structure of the strategy is really comparable to me.
Then it's really just the Lance part for you. I can't agree with the notion that with a Micah Parsons or whoever they used this years first on that it would've won us a SB like other people are pushing. Winning with an average quarterback puts such a strain on the rest of the roster to be elite that it's really not fair to them. I also just haven't seen Jimmy be consistent enough to think he would've made the plays necessary no matter the cast.
Add in the fact that he can't be counted on health wise the team was left with having to do something in 21. Mac Jones would've been a monumental screwup with how limited his skillset is that it really was Fields or Lance. I liked Fields at the time but I can see the issues that scared Shanny off with him.
Its really just too bad he wasn't in Cabo with Stafford. That would've been the move to have had an opportunity at in hindsight.
Stafford sucks, he got eeal lucky when the Rams won it all.
