Playing like Jimmy without the oh no picks, while picking up critical 3rd downs, and making sound decisions, is playing the QB position very well. And that was against a top 1-3 pass defense in the NFL. Purdy played very well in that game without lighting up the stat sheet. He did it as a rookie.
Regardless of facing an elite pass defense, QBs dont light up the stat sheet every game.
Dont care about the stat sheet I care about the scoreboard. He lit it up for just 19 points vs Dallas which often times will get you sent home. Dallas score 20 and we lose and the conversation becomes very different...Purdy is good but is he good enough as only 19 points sends Niners home packing...or Purdy plays a clean game but lack of explosive plays and field goals instead of TDs plagues the Niners once more as during the Jimmy years... Purdy contained by the Cowboys quick DLine and stifles the rooks off schedule brilliance during his preceding starts... etc etc. This is why QB wins doesn't mean a ton all the time.
Transcendent qbs are rare and even when their teams lose quality players and replace them with inferior players the team still wins because the qb is the difference maker ala Mahomes. I don't think Purdy can be that - but I think Lance can at his ceiling. Question is can/does he reach that ceiling or not.
I want to find out.
