It's starting to sound like anybody but Trey up in this Trey Lance thread! That's what I'm starting to see. Not so much even what he can and can't do based off game observations but now it's "hey man. Can we just get anyone everyone just to make sure Trey's not under center week 1?"
Ridiculous man. And we're supposed to all be adults
Actually it's kinda funny because it's starting to sound like guys here are helpless and hopeless when they should be excited
Here's how I believe the season will play out. At least in the beginning:
1. Garoppolo will not be back. It's pretty evident that Shanahan dislikes Garoppolo. It's not difficult to imagine why, so I don't need to elaborate.
2. Lance will be the starting QB at the outset of the season. Purdy will not have had enough time back to properly compete/prepare for the position.
3. I expect the team to win every game that Lance starts; if they don't, I do not expect that it will be because of his play. THIS IS NO GUARANTEE. However, it is not an unreasonable expectation. He will have had the whole off season to get back into sharpening up on the mechanicals. He has had all of the past season sitting on the sidelines watching and learning. Shanahan was confident enough to start him last season. He should be better now; not worse. And he has an excellent supporting cast to lean on.
4. The earliest the team can realistically expect Purdy to be ready to play is 8 months following surgery. If recovery progresses without hiccups, October at the earliest. If Lance is playing well and the team is winning, Shanahan will not make any changes. Purdy will be given more time to strengthen his arm. He has proven that he doesn't need any time to acclimate when needed, so there may not be an urgency to get him back in.
5. Depending on the status quo, Shanahan will observe Purdy's performance in team practices, take his time to evaluate if Lance gives the team as good a chance to win as Purdy, and make a decision going forward. In theory, as a dual threat, Lance has a higher ceiling than Purdy. but he has to prove that he can process the game at close to the same speed as Purdy. Purdy is elite when it comes to that. The better QB will win out. It may be an obvious call, or a very tough one. WE SHALL SEE.
If the team can limit its injuries in 2023, It should be an exciting season of football for Niner fans!
