Of course QB is the most important position, it's not even up for debate.
If you wanna talk a group as a whole, it would be the dline. But TJ Watt and the Steelers will never be an actual contender if they can't get at least above average QB play.
Your last line is my point. Above average. That is all you need from the QB position. Run your team's offense and take care of the football. All you need from the QB position to give yourself a chance.
You need other pieces around him just as you would need around the QBs that play at an even higher level. Once they start getting paid though it becomes even harder.

And that's why the QB is the most important position
You can have an all world defense but if you don't have at least an above average QB, like Jimmy for example that can at least be somewhat productive and efficient, you're a fringe playoff team best case scenario (like the Steelers have been over the past handful of years now) and definitely not a contender.
Especially with how the game is now, there really is no such thing as an elite defense anymore. It used be the case that most often than not an elite defense would win out against an elite offense. Now the opposite is
true.
In the end you can still have a great defense if one or two of your DL players isn't that good or DB or LB, but if you don't have a good QB, the offense will never be good, let alone great.
So ya there shouldn't be any debate at all that QB isn't the most important position on the field.
