😂 (not because I don't like CJ, but because of how impossible that would be to do).

Also that might mean more along the lines of Nate Sudfield NOT the higher end backups who you're spending legit cash on for a one yr deal. Fans b***hing about how the OL causes all these QB injuries and then they'd rather toss money at QB3 instead of the OL. Make it make sense

If we're going that route (signing a higher end backup) I'd rather give them a multi yr deal with little gtd cash and the opportunity to spread out that cap hit/DM.

this whole give a guy $6-$8M for one year stuff is silly.

where is this 6-8 million number coming from?

Th only high priced backups I see are the ones signed/traded to be the teams starter. Trubisky, Winston, Darnold, Jimmy G. The oly exceptions are Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater. Those guys were brought in because of doubt about Daniel Jones and Tua long term.

top 10 highest paid backups in 2022. Before the season started.

Jimmy G 7 mil
Teddy B 6.5
Tyrod Taylor 5.5
Mason Rudolph 5.3
Jacoby Brissett 4.65
Colt McCoy 3.75
Joe Flacco 3.5
Case Keenum 3.5
Chad Henne 3.25
Taylor Heinecke 3.125

I think it's safe to say we would be in the 3.5 million range at best or I guess at worst.

Those QBs would either be too expensive (Heineke, Brissett, Jimmy), or pointless to sign because they suck (the rest of the list). The only vet QB that interests me from this offseason is Dalton and it'd have to be a one year, cheap deal. In other words, the cheap backup QBs suck, so that's why they're cheap. Bridgewater was considered a high end backup when he signed with MIA last offseason and he got $6.5. Same with Jimmy, high end backup for $7. So I think $6-$8 is the range for what I would consider a high end backup.

Exactly…and as the cap goes up so do players contracts. Even backup QBs. I would say Dalton earned a little raise based on his play last yr as well.

I would much rather invest whatever little cap space we have on players that will actually be playing on Sundays.

When Dalton signed his one year deal last offseason for $3 with NO, he was coming off a really bad season with CHI in 2021. He just put together a good season with NO in 2022 so he should get more than 1 year $3 this time around. Although he'll be 36 years old now so who knows, maybe he's still cheap.

Dalton's 1 yr deal last year was only 3 million. That list was only to show that if you're not expecting to start or being considered to start you're not getting more than 3.5ish kind of money.

huh? Jimmy got $7. Bridgewater got $6. It's in your list. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Teams have a lot to consider when signing a backup QB. First of all, how much cap room do they have. Then they have to decide which one fits their system the best so he could fill in if needed. The actual amount they pay him is dictated by the cap and how much they think the backup might play. If you think your QB might struggle or is coming off a serious injury, you might be willing to pay a little more.

In the end, the amount backups make isn't about how good they are. It's about how much certain teams value a backup.

From 2021. The highest paid true backups

Case Keenum 6 mil a year (CLE again like Brissett this year)
Tyrod Taylor 5.5 mil a year(signed to start due to Deshaun Watson sitting out)
Jameis Winston 5.5 mil a year (questionable to belong here)basically signed to be groomed under Brees)
Jacoby Brissett 5 mil a year(Miami again like Teddy B this year)
Mason Rudolph 4.98 mil a year(steelers again)
Joe Flacco 3.5 mil a year
Marcus Mariota 3.5 mil a year.

so taking away the Browns and Dolphins and their overpaying of backup QBs 2021 looks alot like 2022 in terms of true backup salary. No inflation.
Be nice when this thread returns to talking about Trey Lance.

Explained that in original posts. Jimmy situation completely different. The only other outliers was teddy b and tyrod. And those were based on lack of confidence in their current QBs and new coaches coming in

What is the point you're trying to make? That meh backups are cheap? Yeah, because they suck.

It would. If you're not interested in that, feel free to visit the other threads.

Totally agree, he will be that high end backup. Toss him with a team that just drafted a rookie QB and had a ton of cap space.
