Wow NYniner, you left lots to contemplate. I would say it is one of the most insightful posts I've seen on the Zone.............period. Maybe it's because that's the way I feel but never had the forum or the mindset to come out and say it. You've opened something that, I think, is at the center of Shanahan's ability to take this team where we want to go. Brilliant man.

We were talking about this last offseason. In the end, accuracy is what matters most so whatever works best for Lance, do that.
I think most would like the ability to throw it side arm throw just not on every pass.
I'm super curious if side armed throws use the UCL to generate power, like pitchers. Anyone know?
im going to see if I can any research on that. A lot of QBs who throw it wide armed like that (Kap, Herbert etc) tend to have some of the stronger arms in the league.
Found this:
In football, side-arm throws are not typically used as a primary method of throwing the ball. However, when a side-arm throw is employed, it may still use the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) to generate power.
The UCL is a ligament in the elbow that helps to stabilize the joint during throwing motions. While the UCL is most commonly associated with baseball pitchers, it is also used by football quarterbacks and other players who throw the ball frequently.
When a player throws the ball with a side-arm motion, the mechanics of the throw may place additional stress on the UCL. However, if the throw is executed with proper technique and the player has sufficient strength and conditioning, the UCL should be able to withstand this stress without sustaining significant damage.
I interpret that as a yes. Thanks for the info JCool.
this came to my mind when I was reading how important the ligament tissue is in the surgery for a success surgery and rehab. It made me wonder what degenerates it.
so I think if the injury happened to someone like Herbert after like 8-9 seasons in the nfl, his tissue would probably not be nearly as healthy, making a full recovery would be more difficult.
Careful. I was called an idiot (among other things) for suggesting that QB's who were trying to adopt a more side arm delivery were putting their elbows at risk for injury.
I was never a fan of Trey (or any QB) doing this. Hopefully this is a sign that he's returning to a more over the top delivery, which he had in college. Much cleaner mechanics and a better looking spiral/throw.

I agree, I don't like it. It works for guys like Herbert, but like you said, it wears them down. How much? Idk. It is ugly though, in my opinion. lol which doesn't mean much but I always notice It. Haha
yeah, I'm just trying to be optimistic with him and hope he proves me wrong. This is really the first time I've seen him improve anything regarding his mechanics since he's been in the league, so good for him. Hopefully he can transfer this to live play.

Huge difference in at least this one throw. Lance is holding/releasing the ball much higher and the motion is clearly quicker. Both fixes have been necessary pic.twitter.com/PeFhukUPcw
I don't see anything different lol. Clearly I don't know what I'm looking at. I thought the majority of his fine tuning had to do with his lower body? Also, I can't tell if both of these are the same type of throws (distance, arc of throw). I'm assuming comparing the throwing motion requires that the throws are of the same type. For example, a QB will load differently for a 30 yard throw as opposed to a 10 yard throw.
The first one he is releasing the ball at shoulder level in the second one is right at eye level. Sems pretty easy to notice
Maybe easy for someone that knows what they are looking at, like you.
.
Quicker release & higher release point.
Pretty damn amazing what these new ankle surgeries are now able to do.

QB's can throw before camp starts. Not sure if you knew that.

Same. I don't see anything marginally different, looks basically the same as before.

I hope Trey's heart isn't broken if he has to leave.

Nice to see trey working on his throwing motion that no one supposedly cares about.

Here's a great article about the QB coach he's working with currently
https://theathletic.com/1572738/2020/01/30/an-inside-look-at-the-chicago-area-qb-coach-with-his-fingerprints-all-over-super-bowl-54/?source=user_shared_article
Jeff Christensen has been coaching QBs for a really long time…his whole premise is footwork and timing (shocker). Some of the QBs I saw he's worked with are Mahomes, Jimmy G, tannehill, Kirk cousins…but I'm sure there's a bunch more.
IMO we can dissect his throwing motion to death. Overall it was never an issue. If you can tighten it up, that's a positive. It's gonna be all about his lower half though…no false steps, no heel clicking, knowing his drops and the depth of the routes. Being confident in his reads etc. that will make him more accurate.

It was never really about his throwing motion. It's always been about his lower half.
Jeff Christensen, who he's currently working with specifically works on that….if he tightens up his throwing motion, that's a positive. It was never an issue to begin with like some in here thought.

Hahaha-you always want to trade everybody to get salary cap space. Who going to want Trey when he has not proven anything?
Buzz is back and up to his shenanigans…remember when thought he logged into another account and had perfect English under the Buzz account 😝
