Lol I never thought I'd see the day where we officially have career bust Sam. Darnold Stans .

I just can't

So Kyle is a Darnold stan too, then?

What has Darnold accomplished? Be specific. I don't think signing a guy to a one year deal says much. He's a third option. Better than Josh Johnson but he's not going to catch the world on fire like many here think. There's a reason it was a one year contract.

It's not the signing nor contract necessarily, it's Kyle's words and what is pretty clear on tape. Have you watched any tape of Darnold from last season? He improved a ton and ran a system very similar to Kyle's. No one is saying anything about Darnold that Kyle himself didn't also say. So again, is Kyle a Darnold stan?

He improved a ton? Really? I guess when the bulk of your career you're a turnover machine then only having 9 turnover worthy plays in 6 starts is an improvement.

Yes a ton, as you just described lol. Watch the tape from last year. Very similar concepts to Kyle's offense. And as Kyle himself said, "as good of a skill set as there is."

Now I will say that if Minny offered Cousins for Trey straight up like rumoured(not that I believe it), I would take it. I'm not even a big Cousins guy but he's much better than new faithful favorite and career bust Darnold who hasnt done anything, and a lot more accomplished than Trey.

This is strange because I would never do that deal. Trey has a chance to be a star, Cousins is meh and his ceiling is well known. Not to mention his ridiculous cap hit and who we'd have to give up.

Deadspin looks at the 49er QB situation, they don't seem to like it :

This latest news on Purdy's recovery puts the 49ers in a situation where head coach Kyle Shanahan might be forced to choose between a guy considered a bust after five less-than-stellar years in the NFL and a young QB who many feel is on the fast road to bust-ville based on health and has shown little improvement on the field in his first two years. Either way, it's not the best position for the Niners coaching staff.

Once again, they'll have a team that's ready to win as they have for the past few years, and the same problem continues to occur. They can't seem to nail down the QB spot and keep a guy on the field an entire season. Everyone seems to have an opinion on Jimmy G, but had he been able to stay healthy while leading the Niners' offense, he'd probably still be in San Francisco. He might not have the best arm, but they did win when he was on the field.

Indeed, the 49ers could dip into the free agent market again and grab one more body to compete against Darnold and Lance during training camp. But at this point, all the coveted free-agent QBs have been taken off the board. Unless they want to contact a player like Cam Newton, and he isn't even a sure thing at this point in his career. SF could draft another QB, but hoping for lightning to strike back-to-back years is insane and not likely to happen.

Lol we read posts talk about how great the QB room is then we read people post that Brock might be a splash in the pan. Sam Darnold sucks. Hasn't shown nothing in 5 years. Trey needs time.... as if that's his only issues.

So how great is the QB room really? If we quit living off of Trey's ceiling that is unlikely to ever be reached, is this QB room really that strong? Fans from other teams don't view Trey or Sam the same way this board does.

*DISCLAIMER* Not saying Trey is a bust. I'm just saying it I'd unlikely he reaches the pinnacle that alot of you seek. He could end up being a good starter.....somewhere. it's just unlikely he reaches that top 5 QB status that many envision. IMO

I also agree that Trey has massive potential unlike fan favorite career bust that hasn't done anything Darnold but for this season alone I think Cousins gives us a better chance right now. I'm also completely fine with seeing what Trey has. It seems you pretty much agree that Trey has massive potential unlike fan favorite career bust that hasn't done anything Darnold.

Michael Silver on TL value, not sure if ppl picked up on this I didn't:

Longtime NFL reporter Mike Silver, who also writes for the San Francisco Chronicle reported the following on Lance's market in January.

"Even if the Niners are receptive to potential trade offers for Lance after the season, they won't come close to recouping that haul. Based on my conversations with several teams' general managers (and other high- ranking front-office executives), Lance would be unlikely to net much more than a third- round selection, though it's possible there's a team out there motivated to give more."

Put yourself in a GMs position. Would you trade more than a third/second round pick for him based on what's been reported from camps/practice and how he's looked in his few starts?if you watch his games, its more than just his poor stats. He can't even operate the offense as an average level. The injuries are a concern but The injuries aren't that big of a factor because it isn't like he tore his ACL/MCL.

that could all change this off season and I really hope it does, but I personally haven't seen/heard anything very encouraging about his play in camp/practices/games on any sort of consist basis to be optimistic about him.

the reality of it is that he was way way over drafted, and if we didn't do it, someone else would have. If you looked at how raw he was and His film, he should of been a second round pick at best. Too many people fall in love with physical traits, especially if you don't know if the player has the intangibles. Which it's impossible to know with Trey because he's played 30 games since varsity in highschool.

i do like the way his throwing motion looked though in the recent film. I'm hoping he looks much improved this off season and forces the coaches to make hard decisions

Yeah, I wouldn't want to make a situation worse by taking on cousins. Especially not at his salary cap hit. At least Trey is young.
so Trey Lance isnt in Santa Clara right for this first OTA? he's on vacation?

Trey has more physical talent than Darnold, yes. Potential to be a star depends on scheme and coach/play caller fit, and I'm not sure that Trey and Kyle are a good fit. No clue about Darnold in that respect.

For what we gave up for Trey, I hope we find out while he's a Niner. It would obviously be much better for the team if Trey ended up being better than Darnold for us.
