Nobody knows for certain what Brock's status is. As he has mentioned, he doesn't know if he will be playing this yr. Now the question is, did JL/KS suggest he say that to make Trey's value as a potential starter be higher , or was Brock just telling it like it is?
The retrospectoscope can't be used here, because of a number of issues. Jimmy was an excellent qB but had injury problems. We needed a starter QB. So taking a top 3 pick in draft was reasonable. But picking a kid with only 1 yr of starts at NDSU, plus 1 game the following season due to covid, was not such a hot idea, altho i can sure understand Kyle's reason for doing so.
On top of that, then the bad juju happened and once Trey gets his start, he breaks his ankle, and is lost to the season. Worse for Trey, the last pick in the draft turns out to be solid gold in Mr VERY relevant. This was bad juju again for Trey.
Now JimmyG is gone, but the "from out of nowhere starter" , Brock is rehabbing his shoulder. This is ugly juju for the 9ers who picked up Darnold , but it is hard to imagine him leading us to the SB. All this leaves Trey in "nowhere" land. If Brock truly is unable to play this yr, virtually everyone would much rather have Trey than Darnold (well, most everyone). Trey deserves a shot to start somewhere else, but if Brock is not 100% this yr, i sure would rather have Trey at QB than our other choice.
What a hot mess. Safe play says to keep Trey at least until Brock's shoulder status returns to hopefully normal. I would love to see him start elsewhere, but frankly, we need him as a backup until we know Brock's status. Nothing wrong in listening to trade offers, but having Darnold as our only backup…I dunno about that one. Since Trey is not going to bring near his original trade value , we should sit pat…if Brock is okay shoulder wise and we know that half way thru season, we could always make a late season trade (under the deadline). But to do so now? Sure sounds unwise from where I sit.
