the debate shouldn't be "can Lance be a functional solid qb". I think it should be "does the team believe Lance can become a top 5 Qb in the nfl".

i vote no and seems like the team decision makers have too. No one is saying he won't improve, but improve to a superstar? Based on what? His amazing physical traits that couldn't function in rain against the worst team in the nfl? Hell yeah! Gimme some more of that!

Hate to break it to you but Alex Smith turned into a pretty damn good QB despite us trying to ruin him. He also netted 2 2nd round picks in a trade. Weird analogy to use.

I'd cream my pants, if we got anything close to that for Trey.

Trey still young... who knows, he can still end up being the best QB ever... but who knows.. IF Meco and the Texans would rather have Trey and is willing to make a trade, I'd do it in a second ONLY if CJ still there..

That's like a slap in the face to Alex Smith, who had a nice career and some horrific injuries. Dude was tough. Trey has a lot to prove to even be compared to Justin Fields let alone Alex Smith.
I simply can't imagine them trading Lance right now given the circumstances. It would have to be a ridiculous offer.

I hope Lance lights it up in the preseason so I can see this place melt down as usual.

Imagine judging a QB in 1 game.

But even if you analysis is correct, why move on at this point? If Purdy is the starter what is the harm in keeping Lance as the backup? I mean its not unheard of keeping a QB on the bench for a few years.

Because if he isn't playing, this is when his value is the highest. Trading him now/this offseason would give a team the chance to see him for a year before having to make a decision on his fifth year option.

why keep a super expensive backup that you don't have a ton of confidence in and won't be happy not being the starter for four years? When you could get some sort of capital in return and give him a chance to play elsewhere?

I think Trey can be special, he just needs to play to show everyone he can play in the league. But, with all due respect to Trey, I still think, Dirty is the perfect Qb for our system. Plus, he's a phenom that we got with the last pick in the draft. We were due for some good fortune at Qb for a while.

I thought good QB's elevate WR's? If they are pro bowl calibre QB's shouldn't they be the ones making WR's look good?

Lol he made it to the pro bowl in spite of them. Partly why he was top100 player

Alex smith turned into a really solid game a manger, is that what you desire in a qb? Yeah, he's a great guy and super tough. I think very highly of him as a man, but I still don't want him as our qb. Neither did the chiefs when he was being that "damn good qb" you mention.

if you desire to have a game manager, good for you, most of us don't.

Mitchell Trubisky was in the pro bowl. But I do agree with you that Mac Jones would look much better here with this cast of players and coaches.

This is JL we are talking about. So he likely has 2 twos in his back pocket as we speak.
