This is the beginning of year 3 for Lance

this would be the same problem, a QB3, who can't play, who hits our cap hard

i understand it comes with the job and he's getting paid really well, but still, he's a human. I think it would f**k with Anyones mental health. I really hope he rebounds this week and stays off social media

It must suck to win the lottery. Dude is a multi millionaire and doesn't have to work for it. Lol

Perhaps he shares your attitude, which would explain why he's not getting any better even as he gets more time in the system.

Im talking about feeling bad for him. He signed up for this and get paid appropriately.

You must be getting better at everything. Lol. Probably a loser yourself

Loser mentality is only caring about attainment of things, and not embracing the hard work that gets you there. Let's hope Trey isn't like that, and wants more for himself than "free money."

How is it free money? Lol. He put himself in position to be drafted that high by working in high-school and college. He may not be good not matter how much work he puts in. He is still a multi millionaire and will live a good life

YOU said it was free.

lol i caught that one also, us as fans as well
complete shame with ppl wide as bleep open, all this arm talent, and the ball is not coming out downfield

I do wonder what the Shanny reaction or response here is
seems beyond a quick fix, they got some decisions to make

I mean when you work that hard on play design, and it works PERFECTLY, but your QB s**ts the bed and doesn't pull the trigger on a wide open WR, it's gotta be maddening. If it was 1-2 times a game (it happens), okay. But there were several like this in one half. Very ugly, can't defend it anymore. Not when we have a guy (and maybe another in Darnold) who sees it and let's it rip.

It's here where legendary coaches are made. The coach (in this case Kyle) has to see what Trey can become with more coaching and development, versus just giving up. Now, clearly if Trey doesn't have the talent - from the Git Go, then do what Walsh generally does with problems like that. He cuts/trades them. Kyle has to be patient with Trey, if he can see that Trey has the talent worth developing. I can see the talent. He's flashed it on occasion. The problem is the inconsistency. The only way that I know of to cure inconsistency is practice over and over and over etc... There's no shortcuts to being good at something. He has the arm and the body to play at an elite level, it's now just a matter of developing that touch, timing, and anticipation and once that happens watch out. It comes down to reps, more reps, and reps some more.

The issue isn't talent. Trey isn't seeing it or doesn't trust what he's seeing. Playing scared. He's like Maverick after Goose died "it doesn't look good" even when he has a perfect shot. Coaching doesn't cure that, he needs to make a change within himself. Or this just isn't the offense for him.

Just look at the 2nd half of his passes. They were aggressive and confident. He just has to translate that to an entire game vs just bits and pieces. That takes practice. I think folks making a decision on Trey after the first game of the preseason, where he's not played for almost a year (since his injury) in a real game is disappointing. But everybody has their take. That's ok. I just disagree with the folks who think Trey's a bust. He isn't, not yet, and not when he's improving in bits and pieces. Key for Trey to turn the opinions of the naysayers is to improve in the next game. I think if Kyle doesn't think he can improve Trey's game after almost 3 years watching and coaching him, he'd have traded or cut him already.
I don't understand why he looks so slow and unathletic, and it's been this way for three years now... Purdy looks way better scrambling.

I thought the whole point of drafting Lance was - what if Shanahan had a running QB? Did the entire 49er building think he was faster in the draft process? And why not just draft Fields? who is and always has been much faster, if you wanted a mobile QB?

And he's inaccurate. Especially short distance (McCaffrey, Deebo). Inaccurate, average speed QBs traditionally haven't faired so well in this league.

Having said all of that, Lance is barely 23, with a TON of pressure on him. I feel pressure at my job, in my 30's. I can't imagine being 23, with the pressure of three 1's/ 3rd overall pick to my name, with people videotaping my performance (although with me, that might help), and thousands chatting about me on the internet.

Unless we're blown away with a trade offer [spoiler: we won't be], we need to keep him on the roster, this roster especially. He still possesses a ton of talent. Maybe he needs to fail a little to get the pressure off, so he can relax - like Alex Smith. There's just really no point in cutting him or trading him for a mid-late round pick.

And at this time last year, nobody in the world expected Brock Purdy to beat the Seahawks and Cowboys in the playoffs. It's certainly possible that we're two QB hits away from Lance doing the same.

The second part of the bolded answers the first bolded question.

It was not about having a running QB otherwise they would have drafted the clear best runner in Fields, and Mac Jones wouldn't have been in consideration. It was about the ability to have a running element secondary to developing as a pocket passer. I don't think it was a stretch to think that Lance had a better foundation to develop as a pocket passer than Fields (who still has to learn how to be successful from the pocket after two full seasons of playing time). The pocket potential separated Lance and Jones from Fields and the running, big arm, and personality separated Lance from Jones.

I understand what you're saying, and I believe that was kyles perspective as well, but I viewed it the opposite. I thought both fields & Lance were projects as passers, but gave fields the edge as a passer. I thought fields had really good deep ball accuracy and elite athleticism. I also thought fields was more accurate than Lance, more experienced, and played against better competition. I liked the fire that fields played with. Idk how his personality is but I assume it's not terrible - he also scored very high on the same football iq response test that Purdy did really good on.

oh well! It's in the past and things are what they are. We won anyways, since we got the best QB (Purdy) since the 2000 draft pick 199 😈 muhahaha

John middlekauf on the QB2 battle here - talks about Darnold signing here and all that. Talks about how he was at camp last year and how Trey looked, why they resigned Jimmy etc.

A lot of people seem to take one extreme or the other with Trey. From Trey being a bust to the 49ers being racist.

There is no middle ground.

Trey needs reps and would have got them last year if not for injury. But somehow the 49ers are racists. let's trade three 1st round picks to stick it to the mixed guy. We will show him!!! 🤡

Trey has played 5 games. He is a bust!!! 🤡

It's just a unique circumstance that is hard to accept for some. Trey was given the keys to the franchise last year but got injured. Another guy came in and stepped up and led the team deep into the playoffs. That doesn't mean Trey is a bust. 1 preseason game doesn't mean Trey is a bust. Niners naming Brock as the starter doesn't mean they think Trey is a bust.

If Jimmy G never got injured last year and led the team to the playoffs? who do you think would be QB1 today? It would be Trey Lance.

Thank you! We've created a weird tribal thing among a group of fans that should be rooting for everyone on this team.

between Covid, injuries and the way the team wanted to develop him…he hasn't had the chance to play a ton of football. Having him here currently doesn't hurt the team unless the team can get some sort of legit value for him.

It's weird how he went from QB1, got 31 passing attempts to now he might be off the team. The media has crucified him over not much.

He really has to lift his game in the next two preseason games. Otherwise he will be No3 and moved toward the door until they can find someone to pay half of his contract and maybe get a 5th or 6th round pick. I will write off his performance as just rusty if he does that. But I don't have a lot of expectations for him.

This is a guess. But they started trey last year because they were done with Jimmy, and they had no choice but to start him given what they invested. I'm going to go out on a limb here ( maybe not much of a limb) but Kyle has been dissapointed with Trey from the start. I never got the feeling kyle trusted trey. I posted this last year in preseason before the season even started. Kyle's demeanor changed when Brock came into the game. His play calling his sideline attitude, his excitement. Brock has given Kyle a chance to move on from trey without being crucified for the draft debacle. That's why they've moved on. Brock has given Kyle an out.
