When JG came here, everyone kept saying he'll get better. He needs more experience in ths offense. When he got hurt, they were always willing to give him time to get back in the groove because he was rusty. But they expect Trey to be good right now with no experience.

Trey isn't just inexperienced. He's the least experienced QB the Niners have ever drafted. In any round. You can criticize Kyle and John for taking a chance on him but they couldn't have predicted the injuries that messed up their development plan. They now have a guy that they invested a lot in but is almost like a rookie. In some ways he's worse than rookie since it's been so long since he had any extended playing time. It's not like Purdy who started 4 years and played all those games.

He's raw, question is when won't he be raw?

Agree 💯%, and it's *good fortune* that they found Brock who can win now - during this super bowl window, and not place so much stress on Trey during such a championship run. But for Brock, Trey would be starting and we'd be in QB development hell (LIke Alex's first couple of years with the 49ers). People should appreciate the good fortune of finding Brock, not the struggling fortunes of Trey. Trey can now be developed according to Kyle's original timetable just like prior to Trey's injuries without too much actual losses during the season because of Brock's superior play.

Kyle tried his best to not say bad things about Trey in case Brock wasn't ready to start the season. , but I can see his facial expression he was tired of having to talk things up about Trey post game.

FTFY

AND to add to that, Kyle had every opportunity to talk up trey when asked recently about the criticism Trey was receiving. Instead of saying it wasn't justified, Kyle simply said it comes with the territory. Kyle isn't even hiding it anymore.

What should he have said exactly?

He could have said Trey Lance is the Real Deal.

Okie doke Trey Day. It isn't about one preseason game, it's about showing nothing to resemble an actual franchise QB, no great body of work since high school. The fact that when you squint your eyes and look at Trey you see Patrick Mahomes doesn't change that.

Nobody is saying he'll be Mahomes. Purdy won't be either. All their saying is Trey needs a real chance to develop and he's not likely to get it as long as Purdy stays healthy unless he starts to struggle.

Knowing our QB injury luck, (knock on wood) Trey and Sam will have chances to shine in 2023. Unfortunately.

Kyle's a good coach. He's going to tailor his comments to what he thinks each player needs to hear.

This post is what Silver / Rich Eisen were talking about

What's funnier, is that some still think opinions on Lance are based on one preseason game lol

Yeah I mean, the criticism IS justified. Everyone knows, including Trey, it wasn't a good game. Lance admitted that much himself. Shanahan offered a simple, logical, honest response to the criticism -- "When you're a high pick, especially at QB, you're gonna be heavily scrutinized. He's done a great job blocking that out and focusing on getting better, which he has."

Nothing between the lines about it. A basic normal comment. They've already talked a lot about their belief in Trey, I don't expect Kyle to go on and on about it every time Lance's name comes up.

The over the top hate on Trey after that preseason game is absolutely pathetic.

Hate make you sound like a drama queen. It's not hate, he's just not good. That's fine, I wish him well, but I want the best players in all positions on my team. Do you hate Nate Sudfeld because you don't want him as your QB2?

Mike Silver had a recent piece on the subject of fans making the topic of Lance emotional and not as a football decision / opinion. Rich Eisen has talked about it recently also. As usual, it's just about what is best for the squad. I don't see holding on to a large cap hit who isn't playing games as a smart move. I liked Suds, but just cuz I thought maybe he could help the team, as a backup. Course, he was let go, cuz we had a certain Brock Purdy. It was a great move for the team, tough for Suds I am sure, but hey that's part of pro football.

What's better for the squad is 100% keeping Lance. Let me break down best and worst case scenario for us keeping or getting rid of Trey.

Trey is gone
Best case scenario - Brock Purdy looks like the same guy we saw last season, never gets hurt again and we win multiple SBs with him
Worst case scenario - Brock regresses or gets hurt again, Darnold comes in and looks like the inconsistent turnover machine he's been his whole career and you have Brandon Allen to save your season who scares nobody

Trey is on the roster
Best case scenario - same as above
Worst case scenario - same as above but you have Lance

Call me crazy but I'd rather watch the team's hopes hang in the balance with Trey Lance than Brandon Allen. If anyone says otherwise while being serious then you're delusional as hell. Because I can guarantee you whatever you saw on Sunday, if Trey is out there with out top unit, he's looking much better. If he's out there with an actual game plan to attack the other team, he's looking much better. Brandon Allen is going to be Brandon Allen.

Lance is not going to save us is Darnold struggles. The possibility that Lance would play better than Darnold in the next 2 years is so unlikely that it is no reason to keep Lance.

Show me a game from Trey Lance where he looked anything like Darnold's most recent game?
5/15 43 yards 0 TD 2 INT with 2 fumbles

btw both Darnold and Allen are on 1 year deals.

He's a young multimillionaire and will be better off in life than anyone that has ever visited this website. If fans want people to shut up and stop criticizing his play, he needs to play well. It's that simple.

I disagree, you can bash someone's play and not get personal, especially when the kid is young and hasn't had time to improve like many others.

Nobody should feel bad for Trey but the lack of professionalism is pathetic.

Show me a game where Trey Lance played on teams like the Jets and the Panthers that Darnold played on, rather than on the 49ers that Trey played on with elite talent everywhere and an offense that is tailormade to help QBs play well.

Darnold is a better QB than Trey and it is not even close.

See guys! Schefter isn't a bad guy. Isn't a Lance hater.

I agree with what he's saying. Although Lance looked like 💩 on Sunday. It's not over for him. He can still show out in practice and next two games, and solidify himself as QB2.

Lance was 3-3 in practice.
