46 +1 active on game days. the +1 being a QB designated before the game who can only enter the game if QB1 and QB2 get injured.

The 3rd QB can't go in unless both QBs get hurt. I don't think he counts against the active day roster either. So they can have 3 QBs ready to role, but there's an order to how they have to go in after the starter goes down….the QB2/QB3 can change week to week as well

What does this exactly mean? Is it technically a 54 man roster then?

No, all three QBs will have to be on the final 53 man roster but only two have to be active on gameday. So one will be one of the inactive, but the inactive one can be designated as the "emergency QB".

So what's the benefit if it's still a 53 man roster? I dun get it

Most teams only have 2 QBs active on the team during Sundays. So now they'll be able to have a third qb if both get injured, like what happened to us in theNFCC, that doesn't count towards the active 46 on game day.

it's really for the quality of the game. People turn off and stop watching games if one team doesn't have any QBs - it's not competitive.

Yup that's how I read it as well

They should have done 53+1 as well.

ehh. i dunno about that. it's not like it's mandatory that teams must carry three QBs on the 53 or have an emergency QB on game days.

We can already choose from 54 or 55 on a weekly basis given the 2 weekly PS elevations we're allowed to do.

If you've noticed, Griese and John Lynch have done the same thing. It's kinda surprised me, I've been waiting for them to say he's running the offense really well, sharp, confident etc but they just keep repeating the same thing "he looks much improved" but what the hell does that mean?

the only qb they've openly praises this off season has been Purdy, I find that interesting. Trey is definitely improved but the team isn't giving anything to which way they're leaning with Trey and darnold. Seems like they've been really careful with that.

I think Trey is a good dude, so I am perplexed by how management sounds.

To me, it sounds like managers that have put someone on a write up, and they are careful in how they talk about the employee.

I know sports has a whole additional layer of phycology that lays over the top of that, and marketing has a layer that lays over the top of that as well.

I wonder if this is just a motivational tactic, or if this is just creating a buffer of deniability incase Trey "clicks" sometime soon or leaves the franchise sometime soon.

If he clicks and becomes the undeniable starter, the narrative is going to be something like "we said he was improving but we have to manage the expectations with young players"

If he flops, the narrative is going to be something like "we saw improvement, but not nearly enough that we could depend on him week to week in this offense"

Either way we are clearly seeing soft praise for Trey from the franchise, that is clearly better publicly calling out his faults.

I know it's not mandatory. But allowing a 53+1 (only if it's for the emergency QB) would mean not taking a hit at depth at another position.

Biggest arm on the team, and his touch has greatly improved. I thought this past game he hit some critical throws under pressure too, although a few bad ones to start out.

Just found the response kind of weird lol. Maybe Kyle is tired of the questions.

Agree💯%. I look forward to Trey's short passing game getting better against the Chargers. I'd be looking for touch, timing and anticipation. Trey's long ball passes are not in doubt. Those passes to catch up and win the game against Denver is par for the course when you have a strong and accurate arm. Trey checks those boxes. The key now is for Trey's short game to catch up to his long ball game. As an example of hoped for growth, that screen pass interception in the Denver game - I'm hoping if he throws another screen pass against the Chargers, and he sees the RB closely covered, he holds on to the ball a bit more and drops back further to draw the DLine further away from the RB and then sidesteps the DLineman and sidearms that throw to the RB or have that throw be on a higher arc to the RB and places it more downfield - away from the DLine.

For me personally, if Trey can tighten up and get down those short passes, he'll easily win the QB2 spot.

Trey seemed to throw that screen to Bell just fine for a big gain last week too.

I think if the team can't retain Darnold, Trey would be a nice backup to keep around for a few years if there's a mutual desire there. Keep him in the system, let Trey develop here if we can keep him at a fair price.

If Trey's willing to sign for a reasonable contract I'd keep him without a second thought.

I mean, it seems like a win win. Outside of being gifted a starting job somewhere else, if he's gonna be a backup somewhere, I don't know if there's a better opportunity for Trey than continuing to learn under Shanahan and Griese as a reserve.

Jordan Love looked bad for years backing up Rodgers, even starting out year one as QB3. Now.. In year four the kid looks like something. Deep down, I get the feeling Lance could do the same if he stayed. Not that he'd start, but he could establish himself as a much better player and hopefully get sought after in a trade and get a shot to start somewhere else, get us a better ROI, and give us some depth in the meantime.

Again though, that all would depend on multiple factors coming together -- Darnold not returning, mutual desire from the team and Trey to stay, the right price, and him progressing over time.

Yes, Jordan Love seemed to have learned quite a lot in the last 3 years in the NFL, even though he only started 1 game so far. Same for Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy G, they were quite prepared to play when they finally get to be QB1. It seems like Trey hasn't developed as much after 3 training camps. He is still battling to be QB2.

Yesterday after the first drive Trey looked better than Jordan Love looked in last year's preseason.

I don't think so. Overall, Trey is having a bad preseason thus far. Very inconsistent. I suppose you can say Trey looked good excluding a bunch of bad plays, but football doesn't work like that.

Also, remember Trey right now has 3 times the NFL start experience compared to Love (excluding Trey's Seahawk game).

Bruh he threw three interceptions against us.

Football works like that for Jordan Love apparently

I look forward to Bell and Trey hooking up more in the short passing game against the Chargers. If I was Trey and I have Bell as my WR, I'd be throwing to him all day. Basically I would just audible to a run if I see the Chargers loading up on the pass, and basically audible to Bell as the hot receiver after a good run by the RB, or anytime I'm throwing the ball.

that would definitely put Trey in Shanny's good graces
