I'd say more a question about evaluating QBs
This is the product of not having a traditional GM, or a HC who is the defacto GM.
We don't properly assess value in our picks. They've still been really good overall.

Front office handled this horribly.
Unless they think Sam Darnold could be a long term answer.... which is tough to bet on.
Imo they let leakage spread and didn't nip things in the butt. (Maybe on purpose)
But we should have played things off and kept Trey one more season until we knew for sure about Brock. See how team adjust to him this season, and how Brock adjusts back... see if he could stay healthy as well.
*played things off meaning having a good relationship with Trey.. nothing but positive s**t.. until we got a firm grip on the next branch. (Be it Brock or Trey or Sam)
Agree with all of this.
Except for the part that Lance would be a $9 million dollar 3rd string QB.

That's the most reasonable answer. A shame no one talked him into Fields, who has more physical talent.

But I think the money that Lance is slated to make as a third stringer is a problem for a team looking to break the bank on Bosa and who probably wants a shot at retaining Aiyuk too. Meanwhile, the third string QB is making three times the QB1 and QB2. That doesn't make sense, especially when Lance isn't blowing us away with his progress and taking the reins of the position. He is making some incremental improvement. I feel bad for him. He was way over-drafted. Maybe he'll end up in a better place and still have a chance to start for someone. Lucky we stole Purdy the next year.
Just heard about this story so I'm not sure what all has been said. My two cents is that it feels like a mistake. I don't think Darnold did all that much to prove he was significantly better than Lance. He might have looked the part better, but I don't recall that he led them to many points in his appearances. You have to wonder if maybe they're just trying to find a way to clear a little money for Bosa's deal. I seem to recall reading Darnold will cost them $3 million this year as opposed to Lance's nine million. Not sure what the ramifications of a trade would have on that number. Seems to me that even with Darnold's three, Lance's nine and Brock's $850K they would still be paying less for their QB room than a lot of other teams.
Obviously, I wasn't among those who was advocating for Lance to start his first year but I'm truly sorry we didn't get a chance to see him develop a bit more. By all accounts he's a really good kid who works hard and wants to be a good player. Of course, on the other hand, I'm not displeased that all of the people who were in here trying to convince everyone how great he was going to be before ever taking a snap in the league will now have the opportunity to reflect on the error of their ways.

They got plenty wrong, but built a damn good roster. My issue is how horribly they've been with finding that QB. Pasted on opportunities to have the GOAT, the guy who's gonna be the next GOAT, a rock star who all he wanted was to play for SF, s**t toss in Rogers/Stafford as well.
To me thats more "they lucked into a great roster" than they built a great roster.
If they knew how good Kittle, Warner,... would be, those would have been their early round picks.
What they did is: f**k up 80% of their 1st and 2nd rounders and luck into their late round picks.
Those early picks are the players you believe in the most, thats why you pick them over those you select later.
And we know lynch and shanahan give a s**t on draft grades, projections of who goes where and value.
Pretty remarkable how much s**t they've lucked into lol

Would have been banned for saying this about Jimmy stans maybe.

Lance gonna get moved to the Vikings? I'm sure he would welcome that
Trey with Jefferson and a 2nd year Addison would be deadly.

That's the difference between a few NFCCG or a Super Bowl appearance vs a Super Bowl win or two.
Yet if we get better QB play this year then they have in the Shanahan era they can win despite those misses. That's the importance of the QB.

Yeah, except he never said that.
