We're trying. We need a trade partner otherwise the cap ramifications are not worth the difference between holding him and keeping BA as the 3.

If we can get a pick and free up some salary, the drop off from Trey to BA, if there actually is one, is worth it. If we can't, just hold the player.

What exactly do the 49ers have to gain by keeping him?

A QB3 who might be needed and could be better than Allen.
Someone with upside.
Increasing trade value.

What does the team gain by moving him for minimal return?

QB that knows the system in case they get down to their #3 yet again. Also cutting him doesn't really save them a whole lot. Either they get something of actual value back or they hold on to him as insurance.

Speaking for myself, he did look bad. Remember, though, this too shall pass. It is a long season, and Trey could potentially overtake Darnold as the season progresses. It will take a lot of work, but I think it can be done.

Some are confused because they told themselves whatever they had to in order to convince themselves Trey actually played well at any point as a 49er. The fact that some believe he's had even one good game, is crazy.

now that it's blatant from the coaching staff/organization - they're trying to find some excuse for the situation. He's been bad, he's been injured, he is very far behind even the rookies that'll come in next year.

it's just the reality of the situation. I've been mind f**ked for the last year how some tried to tell me Lance played well. A couple good throws in a game isn't playing well.

We gain millions of cap, Allen, we move on from a major distraction, and I assume there would be a pick swap, so our draft position will get an upgrade on some level. If you listen or read Bill Barnwell, he says TL is gone by Oct / trade deadline. If it happens now, we retain Allen, otherwise we lose him more than likely.

I'm sorry, my beloved 49ers failed Trey Lance. And if I were him I'd demand to be released.

Lol. The 49ers will tell him they paid him 30+ million dollars and they'll do what's in their best interest. Be a pro and stfu.

And wasted 3 first and a 3rd on him, on top of that 30+ mil.

Not really. To judge a QB after 4 games is just dumb.

They were actually pretty funny (and frustrating) at the time.

The debates were often about film from a game, and how the guy played in those games, and if reps were good or not good, etc. If he's got good quickness or not, etc. Those are the ones I am speaking of.. probably a bunch of others along your lines lol, it's a big thread..

To me, every bit of film put out there, every rep, you can break it down, and see what happened, how a guy did, etc.

WE only have seen him for 4 games, Shanahan has seen him for three training camps. So bad, they demoted him to QB3 before the last preseason game. But hey, if you don't trust what Shanahan is doing, don't watch is what I say, no one is forcing you.

Trey could have shown out and kicked butt! He didn't. He looked pretty bad. He showed he still isn't ready. Considering he was one of the rawest prospects ever, nobody should be too surprised. His injuries derailed his development. No one to blame. Just happened.

That's the problem. "raw prospects" get taken as a day 3 pick, not third overall . Everyone was told this, and the Niners gave up the farm for him anyways.

Might be time to ask these people how many games is acceptable to judge a player as a fan… and then follow with a question that has been asked a bunch but where do these games happen for him here.

I wonder how much is draft 'groupthink'. Seemed ol Z Wilson did a throw at pro day, and went rocketing up the boards, and everyone goes along with it. No one wants to be the one guy saying, wait a sec, this dude should be a round 3, not pick 2.
