Ultimately Treys fate with the Niners was determined last season when Purdy showed that he could play at a high level in the NFL.

I'm surprised that wasn't more obvious. They put in an offense that is suited to Brocks abilities. Brock demonstrated that he deserves the full attention of the coaching staff to continue to develop. He earned his shot and should be given the same chance to learn and grow over the next couple of seasons as any highly drafted quarterback.

On a team trying to win now it makes little sense to keep a second young qb that hopefly would never have had to play. Without playing time Trey was never going to reach his potential.

As for QB2 you keep a guy like Darnold because you are in win now mode and hope he doesn't have to play but if he does you want a guy who can come in and win a few games. Not a guy who you would have to change the entire offense for and that needs a lot more time to get better.

We have had some strange circumstances at qb the last few years but when a franchise has a guy they think is the future they go all in on him. If the starter gets injured the season is over anyways. We got lucky last year that we had several qbs that could win games.

You don't base your future on "if our starting qb gets hurt". It's another story if Brock flames out and they kept the wrong guy but they decided to give Brock the chance to prove himself. Trey wasn't part of their plan any more. There was nothing he could have done to be the starter this season and as long as Brock plays ok he will be the starter next year. That doesn't leave any room for Trey to develop on this team. It was time for everyone to move on.

I agree. Kap did some great things for a couple of years. This team is more talented offensively and I can't see Trey having the run Kap did 2012 - 2013 season.

Definitely. He is in the same spot with a more entrenched starter. At least with the 49ers, there was a slight chance and he knows this system- three straight training camps here. Idk...crazy to me that he wouldn't want to beat out Darnold.

He had no chance to beat out Darnold because there wasn't a competition. They've been off Trey for a min. He was clearly the better player than Darnold in camp and preseason.
Lance was QB1 in OTAs. When Brock returned, Lance was QB2

he's been here for 3 camps now, he's had plenty of chances

They alternated Lance and Darnold every practice whether QB1 without Brock being there or QB2 with Brock there.

Kyle also explicitly said OTAs weren't part of the "competition"

I also don't buy for a second that Darnold really beat out Trey. They decided Brock is the guy and didn't want fans clamoring for another guy should there be a rough patch and knew they would get some cap relief next year and could get more value for Trey vs Darnold.

We saw what a QB2 Sam Darnold looked like Friday night.

If you're gonna go the conspiracy theory route, IMHO the more reasonable one is that Darnold's natural tendencies favor a scheme more similar to what Brock's favor.

That is the real bottom line here. Kyle wants his back up to be able to walk straight in and use the plays he designed for the game at hand if Brock went out for a game or two or three. There will be the least disruption. With Lance he did not have a quick release passing game. In the short game he had to run too much which would become too predictable and make him prone to further injury. He could land longish throws okay but he needed more then that. Kyle wanted plug and play. Trey does not fit the socket.

Issue with that is Darnold's tendencies are turnovers and the offense all QBs have been running in camp has been the same. Not like they had Lance doing his own thing and you'll be hard pressed to find any reporter even if they were biased against Trey to say Darnold pulled away with this thing.

Kyle can always play the "they don't know what they're looking at" card but I think they simply wanted to go with Brock and clear any roadblocks from him being the guy all the way while also clearing cap and getting a pick in return.

Yes Darnold had too many turnovers. That changes with experience and scheme and coaching. It is funny that Trey was sold on his unrealised potential but with other QBs your view is they are stuck in time with no hope of improvement. Darnold is in a different environment now with a much better scheme and coaches. The proof is in the pudding. Darnold started in this system in TC. Lance has been immersed in it for a couple of years. Darnold separated himself markedly in Training Camp and it was obvious in the preseason games. If Darnold was so garbage how bad is Trey when Darnold separates himself in what is a new system to him in a matter of weeks?

While I was willing to write off some of Trey's poor play against the Raiders as rusty in preseason where he could not throw to his first and second reads only making passes to the checkdown, he was still too slow out of the blocks against the Chargers. Sure he made some good throws in the end but you cannot be competitive in the NFL if that is how you start a game. Darnold look so much better and more consistent that it was not funny. Trey lost the job fair and square and then wanted to runaway to the Cowgirls demonstrating he does not have the must win mentality that Jimmy G had when he had to eat humble pie and let Trey be the starter. Jimmy's never say die attitude to competition demonstrates that he was also superior to Trey. I doubt very much Trey will prosper at the Cowgirls unless he develops the never say die attitude. That is his biggest weakness.

Trey did more in one quarter than Darnold did in his entire preseason.

Darnolds offense in his second game had a total of 64 offensive yards in 6 drives including 3 three and outs before his one scoring drive out of 7....Trey did that in one drive.... He was slow on reads and held the ball too long on 2 sacks. I have screen shots in his thread. Last game he threw it right into a defenders hands on a throw much dumber than Treys should be int but was a td. He wasn't moving the ball at all outside of his one TD drive unlike Trey.

What exactly did Darnold do? You guys sure seem to hold a 55+ game bust to much lower standards than a 4 game raw guy. I really don't understand it.

Stephen Jones just said they want to get Lance signed to a long term contract sooner rather than later. Those boys are nuts.

Lol I don't get it.. are they tryna replace Dak in two years? maybe that is their plan to clear up some cap space going forward.

Dak is going to continue costing them a fortune, so maybe they think they can get adequate play out of Lance. I've always said that I thought Trey's ceiling was a Dak type player.

I mean it makes sense. Buy low,...potentially sell high.

his value was crap to begin with because he becomes expensive next year and potentially, the year after.

The thing is that in the NFL the future is always one play away. I watched a QB for Carlsbad chew up Mater Dei last night. He's committed to Alabama next year. He can run and pass like Caleb Williams but maybe even better. Maybe 4 years from now the Niners can draft him.

Julian sayin?

Julian Sayin? More like Julian SAIYAN amirite.
.

Yeah Julian Saiyan from Carlsbad Lancers is a good QB. A very accurate pin point thrower. He's tremendous. It's in North County San Diego and Coastal. A pretty nice neighborhood and generally expensive. Carlsbad Lancers have had a many College players and even a few pros over time from that program. They generally have some good talent at that High School. But usually aren't the best overall in CIF Playoffs. Individual talent is there. I think they are saying they could win the San Diego section this year due to the extraordinary circumstance.

I like the way Cali does their playoffs for sports. I think the whole 5A 4A 6A divisions and stuff, its dumb. How can you have 6 state champions? Cali does it where its the best of the west.
Same thing with wrestling, doesn't matter what school you go to - if you qualify for state, you play in the tournament. There is only one champion in Cali in each weight class. So Dumb how most states have like 7 state champs per a weight class. lol just have them wrestle off and its last man standing.

Great post Hammer. This is of course true. Most of the people posting on this thread will ignore your comments and go back to arguing amongst themselves. The amount of time people spent arguing over qb2 this off-season as opposed to discussing Purdy is insane.

Trey will be better than Dak when it's all said and done. Dak is in Kirk Cousins territory for me.

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous. They have multiple champions. Mostly based on the size of schools to even out. Big play big. Middle play middle. Small play small. While more fair the big schools are the real Champion.

The town I grew up in only has one junior high and one highschool, which is great cause everyone you're playing with your wntire childhood - continues through highschool. The talent doesn't get spread around, so we were always good at every sport, except basketball. Hahhaha but for a public school, we played in the state championship one year, numerous state champions in wrestling, the pitcher in my grade went to UCLA and was drafted by the giants. Etc etc not bad for a public school.

i like the way cali does it, personally, but I get the whole thing between the large schools for team sports. I think wrestling should only have one state champion per weight class. Doesn't matter how big your school is with that sport, it's one on one.

this one qb that was way older than me (like 12 years ahead of me), played for the chargers when Doug flutie and Bree's were there. He had a picture of it, pretty cool. Nice guy and said both of those guys were nice.
