Maybe not intentionally but mismatches and blown assignments happen all the time

Seeing it and hitting it are what the elite QBs do

That argument works both ways - he has the 2nd team o-line too. And I'm much more bullish on our D-line depth as I am about our O-line depth.

Lance is essentially batting 1.000 right now. He'll probably have some bad practices, but it seems obvious now that he's earned reps, even if it's just a few at first. He'll need to string together another 6 consecutive practices and then show it preseason. But if he's still batting 1.000 by then, the arguments moot and Jimmy is probably cut/traded.

Ok, but why does that matter? The ball was out in front of Sherfield and hit him in stride.

People should also keep in mind that Lance is playing behind the backup o-line. There's a much greater drop-off in talent between our starting o-line and the backups than there is between the starting d-line (minus Bosa and Ford) and our backup d-line.

Good point. Another thing to consider is that if a starting QB were to go against the 2nd/3rd stringers, you would expect him to carve those guys. Trey went 14/15 on the day.

It's still very early, but if Shan was so tied to Jimmy, his actions would show that. Instead, he has inquired on Brady, Stafford, and Watson. He's been a part of the decision to not restructure Jimmy to guarantee him his money, and he would not have agreed to trade three firsts to move up for a QB.

Jimmy is great at what he does, which is be super consistent from 0-20 yards. He doesn't push the ball downfield that well, he doesn't move outside the pocket, and he doesn't throw outside the numbers that well. If Trey can master the offense to the point where he can match what Jimmy does from 0-20, the competition is over. His talent just gives him the ability to be better in all the areas that Jimmy is limited.

It's like wondering about Lance coming from a small college program - it's a legit question but I think that if a player from a small school shows that he is absolutely dominating lower tier talent then that bodes well for how they will do in the pros. Similarly, if Lance is dominating the second stringers that bodes well for how he will do with first stringers.
I love how people use the "well he is facing off against 2nd and 3rd stringers" as some sort of justification for how good he looks, while they never acknowledge the fact that he is also playing WITH 2nd and 3rd stringers.
Great stuff in here from people who know Trey well.

Not only that, but 2nd stringers are still NFL level talent and a small handful of the best football players in the world. Overall the 1's v 2's argument is weak IMO.

Sure. Having Kittle and Aiyuk vs the 2s on defense isn't an advantage at all.
