He'll be fine - he just needs a better supporting cast.
I haven't seen Jimmy G make many 80 yard bomb throws over the top like that in his whole career. The fact that he can, has the arm strength and accuracy rolling outside the pocket against his dominant side is really a great sign.

The athleticism is there. The arm strength is there.

As for being raw and a bit confused at times. I would expect that. He's a rookie, came from a lower division level, and missed a year of football (Covid). No fault of his own.

Calm down guys. We will be in the Super Bowl with this guy eventually. Bet on it.

.....

I did think it was odd. There was a lot of drop back passes today.

Gotta win from the pocket first. Things will be so much easier for him though once the running aspect of his game is utilized

ya qbs never drop back and pass anymore. very odd thing for a quarterback to do

Shanny seemed to deliberately call plays that put Trey in difficult situations for him to learn from. He could have easily call the game that would make Trey look like a GOAT from the start, but that wouldn't help his development.

Agreed. Once he gets the benefit of being a run threat (playaction) he'll get better looks. The traditional dropbacks are where he will need to improve the most and that's what Kyle dialed up today. Now he has film to learn from.

Yeah executing those 2-minute drills and being able to pass when the defense knows it's a pass will be key for his development and today should hopefully help him get better with that.
I think he did just fine. He showed off the big arm we all havec heard about and he's clearly athletic back there.A lot of dropped balls, and a couple of throws he shouldn't have tried. Good thing about a guy with that kind of arm, even on the bad throws the defense doesn't have as much time to react and make his pay for it. Tipped balls for him would be interceptions from a guy with less velocity.

Let's be honest... not an impressive performance.

Outside of an 80 yard pass that was perfectly designed, he didn't too much to show the supposed amazing intelligence and preparedness that everyone raved about. He's big with a live arm, but we already knew that.

He took way took way too many hits andngot gun shy when the first read was taken away... all to be expected from a kid who hasnt played football in over 300 days, but still, disappointing. He needs at least a year to sit.

D+ / C-

Most of it wasn't his fault. His passes were on the money. His recievers didn't help him. The O line didn't help him. What would you like him to do, be a Houdini? I thought he played well.

I think our receivers just aren't used to the fast balls from a big arm. That would explain the drops. I vaguely recall this being an issue back in the day when Kaepernick got his first start.

Niners fans: "Trey's not ready"

Said this before and I'll say it again.
Jimmy's starting week one but Lance will start at least 7 games and gives us the best chance to win at the end of the season.

Just giving him a lot of reps at something he did not do a lot of in college. Kyle used this game to test where Lance is in numerous areas. He didn't have him run because he knows he can do that. No need to waste reps there. This was really a practice game to work on things at game speed that they taught in practice.

kyle forgot to tell the oline to block and the wrs to catch
My biggest concern is he didn't look any better as the game went on. And he almost seemed to get more rattled as things went on.

Granted there was some piss poor protection and dropped balls but it was a little concerning to see. Especially after the early real positive signs.
