Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance Thread

Solid rookie night. 3 drops, 2 potential INT's, 1 flash play on a gorgeous pass design that he executed perfectly, lots of sacks and hits (welcome to SF!), poor 2-minute offense, average accuracy, etc.

I actually like that he didn't run this game and just tried to operate the play calls.

Overall, he looked like a rookie QB learning a Kyle Shanahan offense. He'll build on it.

And not only did Trey get no protection but he was not allowed to run it seemed which negates one of his strengths. And on top of that his receivers couldn't catch the ball. Even sure handed Aiyuk dropped a perfect pass. Everything was working against him but still still managed to not look horrible. What I liked was in his post game press he took all the blame, Didn't throw anybody under the bus.

Trey played like garbage. It's worse when viewed a second time. Two of those sacks were his fault, one for holding the ball and not sensing pressure, another in the shotgun because he kept retreating and set his left tackle up to fail.

He patted the ball a lot, and that hitch in his motion is a little worrisome. Also threw two balls that were dropped by Chiefs defenders. The blitz seemed to rattle him and overall he was wildly inconsistent and got worse as the game went on.

His best throw was the drop by James on that deep out route... really good timing throw. But he missed on about 3-4 other timing throws.

I think he ends up ironing out his kinks and proves to be a solid quarterback, but right now he's just a big, raw kid with a live arm. I didn't once feel like he was "special" out there, and considering where we drafted him, what we gave up and who we passed up I cant help but feel disappointed.

A long way to go, though.

K, coming from the guy who didn't want him in the 1st place🙄
Impressions from the game:
- he has the skills to be an elite QB;
- he made several ill-advised throws;
- accuracy seemed good enough; and
- it was noteworthy that he didn't have any designed runs or scrambled.

I think this was a great first outing for Lance for several reasons:
1) it showcased the deep threat and big play ability that will necessitate opposing DCs dedicating game planning to defend;
2) the big plays and some of the good throws that we're dropped should be a good confidence boost going into team practice against LAC;
3) splash plays play well in the media, pushing the narrative of a real QB competition;
4) there's plenty of tape to review and defensive scenarios he can review and correct; and
5) Shanahan was able to create this buzz without employing the QB rushing attack and many of the good starters.

If a situation occurred where the Niners could add O-line talent to the roster but it would require cutting Jimmy, I'm would be in favor of it.

I didn't want Fred Warner either, and he's the best linebacker in football right now. Happy to admit when I'm wrong.

Let's be honest... not an impressive performance.

Outside of an 80 yard pass that was perfectly designed, he didn't too much to show the supposed amazing intelligence and preparedness that everyone raved about. He's big with a live arm, but we already knew that.

He took way took way too many hits andngot gun shy when the first read was taken away... all to be expected from a kid who hasnt played football in over 300 days, but still, disappointing. He needs at least a year to sit.

D+ / C-

lol what an awful take.

He's a rookie QB who hasn't really played in 2 years, and the last time he did play it was against second rate college teams. This is his very first NFL action, and he held his own. That in itself is really promising.

This is the problem with the 49ers fanbase. They expect Joe Montana from every QB, all the time. Brand new rookie in his first preseason game? Not even a beautiful 80 yard TD bomb is good enough. Not Joe Montana, so its a D+. 🙄

It's not Joe Montana, he's still mad we didn't take Fields. We will continue to see garbage takes about Trey from those who wanted Fields, those who wanted Mac and those who are still attached to Jimmy. Is what it is.

And you bi**hing about a kid playing behind a garbage oline, wrs who have no business being on the field and in his 1st game which is PRESEASON since his 1 game last year in college. Go cry about something more serious

Just finished re watching every Trey Lance play. There was both good and bad.

The good was the first 7 throws he made. All were extremely accurate very well thrown balls. He should have started the game 7 for 7.It was an really amazing start to the game

After this it pretty much was all downhill.

He had 5 bad passes in this game. Or passes that he missed, not all were that bad.

His first bad pass. Was a hard throw over the middle. It was actually a really good read. It was a lazer beam that almost was an amazing throw. Just sailed slightly high on him. Wasn't really that bad at all.

His second bad pass. The first ball that should have been an INT. The defender tricked him nice on this play. He doesn't see the corner leave the other receiver and float back to where he is throwing it. an accurate throw. Just doesn't see the second defender.

His third bad pass. This one was just a bad pass. throw over the middle that he missed pretty bad. Seems like he didn't set his feet right on this play.

Fourth bad pass. The second that should of been an int. Just should not of thrown this ball when he did. He threw it late and It was a poor decision.

Fifth bad pass. Not that bad. Just didn't hit it. a 10 yard out. A Good read. It just sails out of bounds. It is a common for this type of throw to go out of bounds, Because you purposely throw it where either your guy catches it or it goes out of bounds.

It is important to note the offensive line play was awful. Which could have lead to some of those bad throws.

He was sacked four times in this game. Three of the 4 sacks he took were not on him. on those 3 sacks the Offensive line got beat bad and quick.There was Nothing he could really do about it IMO. One of the sacks I think was on him though. He should have seen he had a free rusher coming off the edge and hit his underneath route that was wide open.

Both good and bad. When it was good you could see why he was drafted number 3 overall. When it was bad he looked like the young rookie coming out of D2 football that he is. Hopefully next week we can get him some better blocking and see him be a little more consistent with his throws. He did some really nice things out there. So There was some positives for him to take away and also things to improve upon.

Everyone is playing with or against backups right now. All I'm saying is that Lance didnt impress me. I saw nothing that warranted him being taken over Fields, who does everything he does... but better and in a more polished package, battle tested and with an incomparable resume.

Just giving my take. While I love Fields, I'm a 49ers fan first and foremost. I assure you theres no bias.

He's improved his mechanics a bunch. Still could be better, but definitely not a liability.
lol, some of you are acting like he played like Jimmy did against the Broncos a few years ago.

He had some good, some bad. All I was hoping for was that he flashed and he definitely did.

Fields was horrible in the 1st half and only started to have success once he got outside the pocket and got to play vs the 3rd string players. And he had way better protection all game. I watched that game and he was rarely ever under pressure. Also for the record Trey is the only QB of the 5 that were drafted in the 1st RD this year that had a TD pass vs the 1st string defense.
That's dope!

Let's not forget Rosen either. He looked happy as we can see in that photo.
