RB Trey Sermon

I watched the YouTube about Justin Fields for championship games against Clemson 2020. I noticed about Trey Sermon because I wanted him. He did help to Fields for carry championship and win games. I am surprised that 49ers draft him. It is called big steal him for us! I am happy that 49ers is pretty smart to draft the players talent well.

I am also surprised Sermon dropped to the 3rd round, but I didn't like us giving up 2 fourths for him. The ONLY justification for moving up to get Sermon is if Kyle uses him like a bell cow.

The 2 4th rounders weren't a big deal. Considering we got one of the 4th rounders from moving back a few spots in the 2nd round and still landing the guy we would have drafted if we stayed put in the 2nd round.

In a way, we actually only gave up a 4th and 7th rounder to get the 3rd rounder in this draft to get Sermon. When you look at it like that it is a great move and value.

Agreed...he put the team on his back and won the Big 10 championship for OSU. 300 yards and 2 TD's in that game where Fields struggled mightily (12/27, 114 yards, 2 INT). Without that win, OSU doesn't make the playoffs and Fields doesn't have his signature game against Clemson. Sermon got injured very early in the national championship and the offense fizzed again (although in all fairness, nobody was touching Alabama last year). Hell, Ian Book had better stats than Fields against Alabama.

One thing I like about him is that he's a big strider and is always falling forward.

We may have found our goal line and short yardage back.
This is someone I see slowly taking over as RB1 as the season rolls along, especially towards the playoff push in the end. We needed someone like this badly. A legitimate power back with pretty good hands. A souped up Jeff Wilson.

Yeah. Don't be surprised if he has a slow start. Here's his 2020 totals by game until he got injured.

Kyle rotates backs a lot even when they're healthy. With Mostert's history of missing games here and there, another back is always welcome. He's a definite changeup compared to the type of backs Kyle has had.

I fully expect him to start out kind of slow. It's a rb by committee but he strikes me as once he truly learns the system he has good footwork and burst and I can see him getting 20 touches game in the back half of the season.
It was definitely a head-scratcher that we went two RB's given our history of being able to find success with runningbacks.

In 2020, we were 16th in YPC and 15th in total rushing. But in 2019, we were 9th in YPC and 2nd in total rushing. To me, our moves signal a re-emphasis on our running game. Not only did they forego a slot receiver to get 2 RB's, but they also drafted two interior linemen and a QB of the Future that will probably run some QB Power, Read Option.

I actually find our last pick, Elijah Mitchell to have a one cut north-south style that is far more similar to Arian Foster's than Sermon.

Mitchell is so much faster (and smaller) than Foster. One of Arian's best qualities was contact balance.
I really love this pick. Some might complain that this staff shouldn't pick RBs early but this guy is a beast! Just because they can turn out UDFA doesn't mean that they can't splurge a little and get a future bell cow. I know they like to have a committee and I think that's really the only way to go in today's NFL. Don't get it twisted though, this kid is the alpha dog of the bunch. Other than Big Banks and of course Lance this guy is my favorite pick. Skill players are always fun to draft. They're kind of a luxury but if you get the most skilled ones you can have something special!

I was going to comment on this yesterday I think... maybe earlier today.... idk? Lol. It's 5 o'clock now so things start getting a little hazy! I like the comp to Arian Foster. I remember picking him in Fantasy Football his breakout year. He won me my league and a bunch of money so I'll always love that guy. I'm pretty sure he led the league in rushing? Shanny was OC over there too. So the comp makes tons of sense.

I think his slow start had to do with transferring from Oklahoma and the weird Covid offseason and season. Seems like he got more comfortable as he learned more.
