When Trey Sermon transferred from Oklahoma to Ohio State, he happened to watch a lot of 49ers film to learn his new system — because the Buckeyes run an outside-zone rushing attack that's really similar to Shanahan's.

Hmmm. Wonder if SF been talking to Sermon a few years back and that's the reason for him transferring to Ohio State. Invested in him a few years ago which explains why they HAD to draft him.

Sermon's HS track coach Antwan Toomer: "He was smooth coming out of drive phase (first 10 yards), but pushed too hard and clenched up" rest of the way.
Great news for 49ers
That explains it.
That's such a homer take by Lombardi. Sermon doesn't have top end speed similar to Kareem Hunt. He's got 1 gear, which is a super fast initial burst to make the first two line of defenders miss. However, he doesn't have breakaway speed.
That's okay. Tape don't lie. That was the only "fault" of Frank Gore. There's no reservations for having a back that can tire defenses out via an inside zone game and then have other backs keep the D honest with outside zones.
And then you add a dangerous mid-range passing game AND a dual threat QB....phewwwwwww. This is the offense Shanahan envisioned all along.
Yeah I don't think Kareem Hunt is a good example of a player with top end speed. He's a great back but not a burner.
My point was Serman is LIKE Hunt...no top end speed but great initial burst.

I am surprised that 49ers draft him. It is called big steal him for us! I am happy that 49ers is pretty smart to draft the players talent well.
Agreed...he put the team on his back and won the Big 10 championship for OSU. 300 yards and 2 TD's in that game where Fields struggled mightily (12/27, 114 yards, 2 INT). Without that win, OSU doesn't make the playoffs and Fields doesn't have his signature game against Clemson. Sermon got injured very early in the national championship and the offense fizzed again (although in all fairness, nobody was touching Alabama last year). Hell, Ian Book had better stats than Fields against Alabama.
Very exactly it.

I am also surprised Sermon dropped to the 3rd round, but I didn't like us giving up 2 fourths for him. The ONLY justification for moving up to get Sermon is if Kyle uses him like a bell cow.
Well, We lost 2 fourths for him that is okay. If someone will draft him out because we will miss to grab him for us. We don't need more picks to draft the players. Sermon is a great value and big steal him for us. We had pretty good young guys with plays talents. Bro.

There aren't many AP type runners that have elite speed and tackle breaking ability. I'd rather have a RB with elite burst as well as tackle breaking ability/contact balance (and elite stiff arm) than a burner that goes down with a shoestring tackle like Coleman.

Hyde was about 230lbs at the combine, he was bigger. They both have great contact balance and strength to get YAC. I wouldn't called Hyde explosive at all though, sermon is (neither have that long speed). Hyde doesn't have those dynamic cuts that Sermon does. I feel like Sermon has better vision then Hyde did. How often did we see Carlos miss lanes and run into his blockers
I keep coming back to Kareem hunt for a comp of Sermon....not sure he's as good of a pass catcher, but we will see.

The RIGHT question should be " how often did we see Carlos? " .. the guy was always hurt.. wasted pick.. just like the signing of the Jett..
but Sermon, I see him as a down hill runner, Hyde was like that at OHIO STATE... maybe, it's because of their blocking scheme, I'm not sure.. but I just see
being similar...
While Mostert reminds me of TD, Wilson reminds me of AP.. ..
