Would be nice to run out the clock with some sustained drives

Called it the day he was drafted. No burst, slow. And then looked soft in preseason.

So he wasn't hurt...? interesting
No reason to be down on Sermon imo--he can be a solid player for us over the duration of his contract (even though I always thought Mitchell looked more like a Shanahan back than Sermon).
Positivity aside, fans are kidding themselves if they ever thought Sermon was a good investment of a 3rd round pick. Case in point: our 6th rounder and last years' UDFA are at least as good as Sermon. That's not an indictment of Sermon, it's just more proof that quality RBs are a dime-a-dozen.
Drafting RBs on day 1 is asinine. Drafting RBs on day 2, they better be Alvin Kamara.
Draft your RBs on Day 3, or don't draft them at all!
Bet we all wish we spent that 3rd (and the 2nd for that matter) on a Corner, huh?
Someone tell Lynch it's 2021, not 1981.

I think it depends on the HC. Kyle can turn undrafted F/A's into productive starters within his system. Other coaches can't buy a RB to save themselves.

Fair point. It definitely helps that we have a Shanahan.
There are other examples though... Who is playing RB for the Dolphins today? Myles Gaskin (7th rd) and Salvon Ahmed (our other UDFA from last year, whom we cut in favor of Hasty). And nobody's wringing their hands about MIA's lack of RB talent.
Who are 1st-rd RBs in recent years? CEH, Barkley, and Dalvin Cook are good or very good. Of course there's Fournette, Sony Michel, Rashad Penny (lol). Zeke is no better than Tony Pollard at this point, and anyway the Cowboys' best chance to win is Dak slinging it 58 times per game.
Even the good ones aren't critical to their teams' success (or lack of success).
I think Mostert is great, but who did we miss more when they went out today Mostert or Verrett?
RBs just don't move the needle much, and they're much so more replaceable than the premium positions: CB, DE, OT, WR/TE, QB.

Maybe the niners should trade their third round picks for 5th and 6th rounders. The third round has not been good to them lately.

#49ers Kyle Shanahan says Trey Sermon simply was not among top 3 RBs out of camp, glad Mitchell ran well without hesitation today
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) September 12, 2021
this is damning.

Ouch. Well he has time to get better before thrown into the fire. So that's a plus

That Mitchell is the better runner. Can't even make it onto the gameday roster and looked like dogs**t in preseason.

He'll get his shot next week. I'm not writing him off after one week.
