So many things you could say. A piece of your childhood dying. You and Sunmerall on CBS calling the Niners games were the glory years. You made football fun. At the end of the day, this is supposed to be fun. John Madden represents everything good about this game.
Pleasanton, CA…
This one hurts, a lot.

Growing up a 49ers fan in the late 80s/early 90s, Madden and Summerall were the voices of my football childhood.

The memories I have of guys like Montana, Rice, John Taylor, Steve Young are tied to Madden and Summerall calling the games.

RIP to one of, if not, the greatest sports announcers of all time.

😭
RIP.

The man died and the legend has born today. Thanks for everything you did for the sport we love Mr. Madden. You always will be in our memories.

He loved the game, and you know what, the game loved him back. A sad day for all football fans.

Absolutely heartbroken. 😭

I knew he wasn't doing well and he was really on my mind lately with that. Truly a great one in the game of football and will be so incredibly missed. Another poster said it best. He represented What football is all about.

RIP John Madden

I watched his show All Madden on Christmas, and 3 days later he is gone. He lived a hell of a life. Madden Summerall games always seemed to be great.
RIP to a legend. The game of football will never be the same.

I grew up watching Madden and Summerall in the 90s and there was just something special about their broadcasts that made me fall in love with the game even more.

He's is truly an icon.
Wow. I learned a lot from listening to his commentaries. He had more love for the game than most, and a deep knowledge. And it was fun, for him. An icon. Total respect.
RIP to a bay area Legend!
I remember the day Johnny Cash died...it hit me hard. After watching John Madden's story on Christmas Day, I was reminded of his greatness, humbleness and how much we all enjoyed him. I'm not taking his death well at all...one thing I'm thankful for are the words Goodell said at the end of the show. He spoke about how John changed the game, how me taught us new ways of enjoying the sport and how much he contributed to the NFL we know today. You could tell how much that meant to John. To say John was a legend is true, but he was just being himself. A loving, caring and humble man. God bless you, John Madden. You were one of a kind.
RIP

Bill Parcells is most likely next.
As the icons fall. RIP.
I don't know why, but it's totally sticking out to me how much he loved him some Dana Stubblefield when he did Niner games. He had to have been one of the first to do the telestrater replays and he would just draw a swoosh and say "big ole Stubb-a-field" did such and such, with a lot of excitement.
In fact, I can't read the name Dana Stubblefield without it being in Madden's voice in my head.
Good times.

I rewatched this clip among many others after the news broke. Don't even know where to start… but I would not be the football fan that I am today were it not for John Madden. That clip in particular cuts off about 7 seconds too soon, because he had a great quote that followed "that's the high of winning and the low of losing"

Having a game called by Summerall and Madden just felt special, and you knew you were in for 3 great hours as a viewer.

RIP, John Madden.
