Is this all it's really about?

People here on the Zone shook thier heads at both the Tomsula AND Kelly hires...particularly Tomsula. Some said " give him a chance the players and ownership LOVE him ". We all saw how THAT turned out.🙄

Yeah I remember. Thank God we still have access to those threads. I think some today would be surprised who was saying stuff like that...lol.

There are some awesome posts I remember reading where CK and/or JG were going to be future HOF QBs. Admittedly JG seemed like a bright up and comer that was originally supposed to be Tom Brady's replacement and having won like 3 games in his absence.

It was a very talent poor team. My verdict at the time is he didn't really have the pieces in place to have success. That said, there is a big difference between we don't have talent and we are actively playing to lose and paying the HC a bonus for losing. Jackson has come out and said this pay to lose scheme is a hoax he made up.
I'll try to find the articles when I get the time but back in 2015... it seemed obvious that Trent Baalke forced Tomsula to have Jordan Devey and Eric Pears in the starting lineup... when Andrew Tiller was doing a better job pass protecting when ever he was in there.

Devey and Eric Pears were graded the two worse lineman at their positions the previous season, yet Baalke signed them.

Baalke hiring Tomsula, of all people, was another idiotic move.

Now this doesn't prove that Baalke was trying to lose on purpose (hell I don't even know why he'd want to, maybe to tank for draft picks?)... BUT it does show how a GM or Owner can have a big part in a team losing, without making it obvious.

Edit- forgot to mention Marcus Martin, who one Webzoner gave a perfect description of the guy way in a gameday thread after Martin was lifted up off the ground by one defender's arm... "is Martin made of helium?".

From Jason Riley, one of my favorite opinion editors for the WSJ: Feb 9.2022:

"Why there aren't more black coaches in the NFL"

"One reason is that teams don't want to hire someone they can't fire without being labeled a racist" (I think that was somewhat tongue in cheek but there is some truth to it).

Riley points out "that about 70% of NFL players are black, but yet the league has only 2 black HCs and one who describes himself as multiracial has a black father. In 2003 the league adopted a rule to interview minority candidates for top coaching jobs. Since then, 122 HCs have been hired and all.but 17 have been white. In recent decades the number of black head coaches has fluctuated. In 2014 there were 5. The number rose to eight by 2011, fell to four in 2013, and then rose back to eight in 2017. Those numbers may not be as high as some would like but they don't look like solid evidence of racist hiring practices."

"HCs in NFL more recently have tended to follow a certain career path. An insightful article last month by sportswriter Shalise Manza Young noted that since 2016, three quarters of the 40 HCs hired had worked as Offensive coordinators . In 2021 only 7 of the league's 32 OCs were black. "

"Ms Young then pointed to another potential factor in the racial makeup of pro football coaches: old fashioned nepotism. By the NFL's own data, for its 2020 diversity and inclusion report, nine of that years 32 HCs were related to a current or former coach in the league, whether by blood or marriage", she wrote. The same applied to the league's 63 coordinators and position coaches, 53 of whom were white.

Mr Riley finishes with "This is no doubt a problem for a league that aspires to have more of the coaches on the sidelines look like players on the field. But it is not a problem of racial animosity toward blacks who want to coach in the NFL. And it's not at all clear that Brian Flores channeling of Colin Kaepernick will help more get hired."

maybe so but it wasnt that bad

i mean i thought the texans this year jets last year were more talent deprived
^^^ A couple corrections to above article by Jason Riley:

57 % of NFL players are black

Position coaches in NFL…average of 30% are black

Currently there are just two black coaches, Mike Tomlin and Mike McDaniel. Other minority is Ron Rivera.

There are 11 coordinators that are black.

Lovie Smith? Saleh?
Goodell out there today saying we the NFL suck we're too racist and I have no solution if I did I would have done it already but no ideas here. What a clown.

Top story on ESPN as of this moment

How about if you have no ideas and think the league sucks you step down. Who else gets to run an operation, say publicly it sucks, and I have no ideas to fix it?

Imo, it falls back on ZERO Black owners in the NFL. There are wealthy Black folks with backing, who have wanted to own teams. You tell me they couldn't get one to buy the Panthers when they were on sale?

Broncos are on sale right now. We'll see what happens right?

But by having Black owners....then there's a better chance things would be kept in check. Qualified Coaches, and players would have at least one place where they know they get a fair look. And that's all they ask.

Tepper paid a record amount for the Panthers. That's the only colour that matters....green.

You want us to be a capitalist society, this is what comes with it.
