Jon Embree, the 49ers' tight ends coach and assistant head coach whom George Kittle has often credited for his development from a late-round pick to first-team All-Pro, will not return to the team next season.

Embree, 56, who was on a one-year contract in 2021, declined to accept a significant pay cut to come back for a sixth season, a source said.

Embree joined the 49ers shortly after head coach Kyle Shanahan was hired in 2017. He previously worked with Shanahan, then an offensive coordinator, with Washington in 2010. The 13-year NFL veteran was also the head coach at Colorado in 2010-11.

Hes suggesting that the 49ers asked him to take a pay cut so that he would decline and leave and they wouldn't have to fire him.

Him bringing race into this is ridiculous, and highly irresponsible. The 49ers have been one of the most forward thinking organizations in football, and at least half of Kyle's staff are minorities. There is nothing to see here, but Wilcots is eager pile on to this recent race storyline by grasping at straws.

Yeah you dilute the problem if you call every move racist. I mean outside of kittle the TE room hasn't done much. I legit forgot Ross dwelley was on our team this year.

Was any reason given for the team asking him to take a 60% pay cut, assuming that was true. The team isn't cheap. They pay coaches and front office people well. There must be a reason they would ask him and not other coaches to take a cut. Or did they ask others as well.

If the paycut part is true then my guess would be that they were stripping him of his assistant head coach designation or asking him to take a lesser role on the coaching staff. So he was getting demoted and being offered lesser pay as a result.

That would make sensse.
Kittle was kicked in the achilles early in the ear and even though he managed to stay in the lineup for most of the games I don't think he was ever 100%
I bet you they wanted to strip away the assistant HC role/title from Embree and with that came a pay cut and Embree obviously didn't go for it. I would bet money that Koucerek will get the assistant HC role
and pay raise....

No way... DeMeco is going to get that title.
I find it really hard to believe that Kyle Shanahan actually fired him. This dude typically does not fire coaches. I know he fired Jeff Zgonia and brought in Kris Kocurek. But we're talking about a guy that is still keeping around Hightower even though hes horrible.

It makes a lot more sense that his contract just ran out, and the Niners did not want to bring him back at his current pay.

BINGO!!!! The 14th most routes this year among TEs is absolutely pathetic and a waste of his talent IMO. If people think that's "plenty" I wholeheartedly disagree.

Kittle having to constantly block DEs and LBs took a toll on him physically. Yesterday he said he had been hurting since game 1 this year. I have to believe that running more routes and throwing his body at fewer 300 pounders is going to extend his career. Bring in a new OL coach who can teach McGlinchey how to pass block and...problem solved.

SF was damn near last in passing attempts this yr, so I wouldn't expect him to have as many route snaps as guys like Kelce and Pitts.

McG actually graded out just fine as a pass-blocker this yr. He wasn't elite but 70 overall is pretty good. How he recovers from his injury will be the issue. Our RG issue is the problem more than anything.

Kittle had 850 yards receiving with 3 games to play & seemed like a lock for 1000 yards. In those 3 games he had 8 receptions for 60 yards. I don't care what the reason is... That CANNOT happen.

What's the difference between Kittle getting 150 yards himself, or throwing blocks that spring for 150 rushing yards?
I caught myself wondering who the options might be to fill our now vacant TE coaching position, and after doing some research, I wouldn't be surprised if Brian Pariani gets the job in the end. He is a guy who has a lot of relevant history that would make him a great fit:

  • He is a native San Franciscan (okay that's not football relevant, but you know he knows our history.
  • He got his start as a Niners scout in 1990
  • He was a Niners offensive assistant from 91-94
  • He followed Mike Shanahan to Denver in 95 and was there for 10 of Mike's 14 years.
  • After a year at Syracuse he joined Gary Kubiak when he got the job in Houston in 06 and was there for the entirety of Gary's tenure there, including overlapping with Kyle during his 4 years as a coach there.
  • After Gary was fired from Houston Brian followed him to Baltimore for a year, back to Denver for a couple (including the Super Bowl 50 team)
  • In 2019 he joined Gary in Minnesota where he has been since, he became available when Zimmer got the axe.
  • Over the years he's coached guys like Shannon Sharpe, Owen Daniels, Kyle Rudolph, and Tyler Conklin to good to grate seasons.

All together Brian spent 13 years coaching under Mike Shanahan,13 years coaching with Gary Kubiak, and 4 years of overlapping with our current HC. That's 30 years coaching offenses are basically earlier versions of what we run now. There is just too much experience in this system and too many connections not to hire the guy.

P.S. Sorry I know this post was kind of long, so if you took the time to read it I appreciate it and hope you enjoyed it.

Oh, there's something to see. Race might not have anything at all to do it with it, but it's still a bad look for position coach prospects, assuming this was all done so they could slap the Asst. HC on one of their coordinators. Doesn't look good at all, and the team had done so well the last few years of looking like a place people want to work.

On the other hand, up and coming coaches are usually desperate enough to work anyway. But good luck getting an established TE coach next season.

Go ask the QB why he wasn't throwing him the ball

Id rather ask the coach why.

right because Kittle wasn't out there running routes when they were passing the ball lol. The coach isn't throwing the ball and I don't know how many more clips you need to see of guys being open and jimmy not throwing them the ball to get it.

He wasn't fired, this was the last yr of his contract and SF wasn't gonna offer him the same contract, I'm guessing he wasn't gonna be the AHC and his role overall was gonna be less...hence the pay cut.

Our coaches overall have been paid very well....what doesn't look good? He just finished out his contract and SF wasn't gonna offer him the same amount of money, more than likely because he wasn't gonna be the AHC and his role overall would have been lessened.

In no way should that affect anything with hiring someone else. Some jackass saw it as some race-baiting hot button topic, trying to get clicks.
