The NFL is adding the AAFC stats into it's record books, and it's changing some big records.
- Recognizing the 4 AAFC championships that the Cleveland Browns won adds to the 4 NFL championships they had to make for 8 total and a streak of 5 titles in a row, which gives them one more title than the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cleveland Browns are tied for 3rd in total championships alongside the Giants with Green Bay's 13 and Chicago's 9 ahead of them.
- The 4 AAFC championships combine with Cleveland Browns coach Paul Brown's 3 NFL championships to give him 7 total championships to surpass former New England coach Bill Belichik's 6 titles. Paul Brown moved up the all-time coach wins list from 21st to 7th with the added wins.
- Otto Graham was the starting QB for all of those titles, so he tied Tom Brady with 7 championships. Otto went to the title game in all 10 seasons that he played, so he even match Tom Brady's 10 title games as both went 7-3.
- The 1972 Miami Dolphins have the only perfect season in NFL history, but will now be joined by the 1948 Cleveland Browns that went 15-0 to win the AAFC title since they're at least going to be separated in the record books.
- For other stats, Browns RB Marion Motley is now 4th on the highest career rushing average list (behind Vick, Cunningham, and Lamar Jackson) and is the top RB on the list.
- The San Francisco 49ers have the new record for most rushing yards in a season to surpass the 2019 Baltimore Ravens. They also broke the 2024 Baltimore Ravens record for highest rushing yards per carry for a season. The 1948 49ers averaged 6.1 yards per run in 1948, which will also put them in first place, just ahead of the 2024 Ravens, who averaged 5.8 yards per carry.

Why are guys like Geno getting 40+ a year? Isn't the goal to win a SB? Why are teams paying qbs that are past their growing point, who you know will never be above average 40+? Why not try one of the many young qbs for A LOT cheaper and if they fail, you'll have a young qb to draft.

Do national reporters not follow our team or know anything? Another "trey Hendrickson could be targeted by niners!" on front page with suggestion we swap 1sts and give them 2 thirds...THEN go give Hendrickson a massive contract.
After all we've done this offseason why would we consider doing this?

Yeah, that article is a very dumb take.

The swap and a short term rental for the price tag is one thing, but giving up two 3rds is lame

I'd rather they snatch Asante Samuel and Justin Simmons, and might be cheaper for both. Simmons is 31, but still good and brings a ton of experience to one of (if not THE youngest) the younger secondaries in NFL.

I wanted Asante Samuel but something is really weird about his situation that goes beyond "coming off injury"

He suffered a pretty bad shoulder/neck injury and was still dealing with stinger issues in both shoulders as of January. Virtually nobody has even brought him in for an evaluation (Cards only I think). He'll probably get signed after the compensatory free agent window ends and when he's in better health for the physical. Someone will be interested in bringing him in around training camp.

Man, his career sounds dicey, might have Jason Verrett syndrome... also came from Chargers to Niners. We'll have to pass

The goal for every team is not to win a super bowl. Some teams are just navigating bad cap situations or just looking to be competitive or even looking to tank themselves into oblivion to ensure a high draft pick. They'll sign guys to bring stability to the position, take a chance on a guy that was in a bad situation but they believe could excel on a new team, etc.
As for Geno, it's because he's basically a fringe franchise quarterback toward the end of his career. 30-45M is what they get paid nowadays. Geno's extension was 75M/2 (37.5M) with 3.5M per year in incentives (10.5M total). Those incentives allows him to max out the extension at 85.5M/2, getting that AAV of 42.75M into the 40-45M range he was wanting from the Seahawks. He was extending one year with 31M remaining, bringing his total contract to 106M/3 years (35.3M total AAV), maxxing out at 116.5M/3 years (38.83M max total AAV).
Other quarterbacks in the fringe franchise and end-of-career franchise tier since 2020 - Darnold (Min, 33.5M), Stafford (LAR, 32.7M), Cousins (ATL, 45M), Rodgers (NYJ, 37.5M), Danny Dimes (NYG, 40M), Geno (Sea, 25M), Carr (NOR, 37.5M), Carr (LVR, 40.5M), Cousins (Min, 35M), Brady (TB, 25.7M), Brady (TB, 25M), Teddy B (21M), Rivers (IND, 25M), Brees (NOR, 25M)
The league does have minimum spending requirements, so you don't actually want to commit too much money to the rest of the roster then be stuck paying a trash rookie. The fringe franchise QB tier, end-of-career franchise QB tier, stopgap QBs, and JAGs, all have team-friendly contracts where teams can opt out of the contract. Geno is essentially on a 2 year deal. He gets 40M guaranteed this year and has 26.6M guaranteed next year. The 39.9M on his third year is not guaranteed. Darnold only has his 37.5M in 2025 guaranteed. The 27.5M in 2026 and 35.5M in 2027 are not guaranteed. Danny Dimes' Giants contract was essentially a 2-year deal.

It's not strange at all. It's a serious injury. He needs to recover but someone will take a chance on him on a very team friendly deal once he's recovered enough to pass a physical. His injury isn't a secret. He openly talked about the stingers he's been experiencing when he gave an interview to ESPN back in January.
