I remember thinking we were nuts for paying Nate Clements the big bucks lol
I think Clements was 10m a year (8 years at 80m) back in 2007 when salary cap was a little over $100m. Now the cb's are getting $20m with the salary cap a little over $200m. Rough math, but it checks out.

Clements was not worth it due to his lack of coverage skills but ghawd damn was he good in run support. Probably the best run support corner I've even seen. Should have played LB tbh.

Anyone remember this one?

Matt Ryan pass incomplete short middle intended for Tony Gonzalez is intercepted by Nate Clements at ATL-49 and returned for 39 yards. Nate Clements fumbles (forced by Roddy White), recovered by Harvey Dahl at ATL-7

Yup. Buy Dre Bly's fumble was much worse. At least Clements wasn't celebrating before he fumbled.

Celebrating while losing by a healthy margin from what I recall

I was at that game in Atlanta. That Nate Clements INT would've won the Niners the game if he holds on or steps out of bounce. "Dre gonna be Dre" was during a 45-10 blowout

20m a year for a fkin corner, lololol

Yeah pretty cheap considering the guys they are tasked to stopped are making 25+. And it's not a leap to say it's much more difficult to be a CB than a WR.

more difficult because of the rules, which is why I value corner less. If your pass rush is better you don't need a lock down corner you just need someone to hold steady. instead of paying a top 5 corner 20m, 2 corners in the 20th rank range would cost about the same

How has that been working out for us?

Last two Super Bowls no lock down CB's on the roster = 2 loses.

First 5 Super Bowls lock down CB's on the roster = 5 wins.

In fact the last super bowl that we won was primarily because we brought in the best lockdown CB of all time.
We've lost so many NFC Championship games it's not funny. We should have a comfortable lead with SBs in a perfect world.

our new strategy should be going down in the 1st half in big time games now

And then who picks him up, only to go on to win another....
Didn't see this anywhere on here, Cardinals signed Jeff Gladney back in March. Found not guilty of domestic violence.

There isn't a such thing as a lockdown corner anymore. Todays best corners get burnt on the regular. Ramsey was torched in the Super Bowl. The leagues interception leader was also top 5 in touchdowns allowed. The league did away with lockdown corners years ago.

This.

If recent bowls have taught us anything, a close out pass rush is infinetly more important
I have seen today's breaking news and it is us

yes, but SF has also been in more CGs than any other franchise. Gonna lose your fair share when you make so many

I would never argue that Dre's fumble was more costly in terms of overall impact on the game/season.

Im just saying he was showboating and fumbled where as Clements was running towards or along the sidelines but he wasn't celebrating. I believe it was Roddy white that forced the fumble on him and made an incredible play.

Clements fumble was more costly but Dre's fumble pissed me off more in the moment.

That int was hilarious. Wasn't Moose Johnson in the booth absolutely ripping him apart for it?
