I think thats tricky.

Best defensive player ever; Deon Sanders, Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White, and Ronnie Lott to name a few all seem to do a different job on defense, but all could be considered the best of all time based on the criteria used to determine "best defensive player ever".

I don't think we can determine best defensive player ever, no matter what criteria we use.

Hell to the no. Lawrence Taylor deserves that distinction more than he does and he may not be the best defensive player of all time but you could certainly make the case. LT was an absolute nightmare on almost any given play and you cannot say that about AD. Sorry but a guy who's been owned by someone like Brunskill more often than not isn't the defensive GOAT.

That's fair. I don't know how you begin to evaluate "best defensive player ever" when there are so many different not even so many positions but levels of the defense so I don't know where one would even begin. Probably with who wrecked offenses the most but in what way? Deion as you mentioned completely locked down his side of the field and had the ball skills to make the picks and the speed to take it to the house. Didn't care to tackle very much. LT and Reggie White two of the greatest pass rushers of all time doing it in different ways and at different positions. Heck though, Bruce Smith is the all time leader. At the same time, they didn't even have a "sacks" statistic for many years. I mean not until 1982. So again, where does one even begin?

They're entitled to their position but their position is what most are- the flavor of the month. Kind of like how Joe I think was likely regarded as the best QB until Manning won that second Super Bowl then people were saying he was. Then Brady kept playing and won another couple or so after that and now he is.

To me Jordan is the greatest ever in the NBA. But flavor of the month, a lot say Lebron is now. But there's somebody maybe playing right now who they'll decide at some point is even better than him.

They don't put a lot of thought into these claims and they basically just throw random stuff up against the wall to see what people say.
