A reason that the 49ers' organizational structure/dedication to special teams must be scrutinized: Schneider coached Seattle's special teams to multiple top-5 finishes over 2010-20. So there's evidence to suggest that SF's special teams issues go beyond who's coordinating https://t.co/vGgJRpeHL1

Not a Dave Lombardi fan but he's right. They sign a few "ST guys" in free agency every year but none of them ever get us to a Top 10 unit.
The goal shouldn't be an average ST unit. The goal should be to be the best special teams unit in the NFL. Stealing possessions from other teams.
You could argue that the Rams fake punt vs the 49ers in Week 3 saved their season.

What he doesn't say there is that Seattle's special teams fell off around 2014. They had several Top 10 finishes from 2010 to 2014 and only one from 2015 to 2020.
How much of their initial success was pure talent versus coaching because they fell off hard?

Ideally you fill up your special teams with late round picks and UDFA's and they haven't done a great job of that.

Shanahan's mantra has been conservatism / minimum viability on special teams. Hell we drafted a punter in the 4th round that played rugby, and we have yet to use him in any gadget ST plays.
Kyle needs to evolve his approach and give more freedom to the next ST coach.

Kyle is very conservative in s/t,if I am not mistaken all 3 divisional rivals have run a fake punt against us in the last 2 seasons, while wish ran 1 against the Seahawks and not on purpose was called back for a flag for holding ,but boy he has some wheels ran a 4.63, Why not use it sparingly.

The #49ers have fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider, sources tell ESPN.
