Mason who some people are so upset about being traded finally started being used as a starter and got injured himself. First his shoulder where you could see the dip in his play and then the ankle.

RB is not a position to get too hung up about when it comes to this offense and right now our RB room is still pretty solid and this draft class is very good at RB. Israel Abanikanda was a sneaky good pickup last year from the Jets imo. He's made for this scheme and I'm excited to see him in camp.

Dont sleep on him. I think he will be a very good RB. He was dominant for Pittsburg as a junior.

Overview

A zone-scheme runner with early down size, Abanikanda can be a bit inconsistent with his reads and tempo early in the run. However, he has plant-and-go agility and is able to snap off cuts at tight angles to elude short-area traffic when needed. He has terrific top-end speed to gash a poorly fitted run front, but he needs to run with better discipline and downhill decisiveness to stay ahead of NFL speed. Abanikanda isn't much of a third down option, but he does have the size and talent to compete for a RB2/3 slot early on with a chance to move up the depth chart in time.

Strengths
  • Ran for more than 100 yards in nine of 11 games last season, with 20 rushing touchdowns.
  • Lateral jump cuts to elude backfield pressure.
  • One-cut talent with feet for tight breaks.
  • Locates lane opportunities on the back side.
  • Impressive escapability in tight quarters.
  • Access to instant acceleration when he needs it.
  • Uses spin move for contact balance and to wiggle away from tacklers.
  • Former sprinter with breakaway speed in the open field.

Weaknesses
  • Change of direction is more segmented than fluid.
  • Runs with hurried tempo, bypassing timing of block development.
  • Fails to press the line of scrimmage deeply to manipulate linebacker flow.
  • Urgent but not overly creative early in the run.
  • Can be a little inconsistent as run finisher despite his size.
  • Has trouble keeping rusher in front of him in pass protection.

Wel your first mistake was thinking we would get a 2nd round pick for Jordan Mason.

No wonder you're disappointed.

Right lol

sign UDFA rb. Get their value up. Trade for picks. Repeat. I dig it
Now trade CMC for a 2nd and Aiyuk for a 4th

A 6th round? After proving that he can be starting RB material we trade him for a SIXTH round pick? I get that we've found some hidden gems in late rounds but damn, I feel we could have got more value for him.

No one is contesting this. Is he healthy and still young enough to be available 17 games.
High expectation for a 31 year old RB coming off two major injuries making 19 mil. With Shany use of him he will be the bell cow. Older RBs not named Gore go off a cliff in production about now nevermind the injuries.

Christian McCaffrey is 28. Twenty-eight. He will be 29 in June. Stop spreading falsehoods.

As for injury history, how did Jordan Mason do the FIRST time he got a real load? Did Kellen Moore run Saquon Barkley and his 345 carries into the ground? Did Todd Monken run Derricjmk Henry and his 325 carries into the ground? Or is this just something that applies to Kyle?

Relax. My mistake on the age.

Wow. This point is a big deal to you. It should be obvious the concern we should have with CMCs injuries, age and Shanys propensity to over use RBs. I really dont understand your defense of this.

I don't understand you ignoring how often RBs are used in other systems but then say Shanahan overused RBs.

I think it's a bigger deal to you. You're on the edge regarding the trade. I think we will be okay. Who needs to relax here?
There is a huge gulf between expectation and reality here regarding trades. People thinking Mason would net a 2nd round pick? Sheesh.

Lol for real. The team wasn't going to sign an average, at best, back to an extension. His production is easily replaceable by a cheaper back for a longer period of time.

they turned it into a positive, knowing they weren't going to keep him. Mason got some money too, good for him.

weird that people are upset over this. lol it's a nobody running back. I wish him the best but we will be fine.
49er fans: Cut and trade everyone! They all stink and can be easily replaced!

Also 49er fans: Why did they cut / trade that guy! Now we are doooooooomed!

No... The expectation with that tag is that you don't let him walk and you resign him.

You put more value than you think he's worth on that tag with the expectation your going to get him back. If he leaves you get the second round pick and don't feel horrible about it.

What we did is just dumb. You don't trade a young RB who demonstrates he can be a starter and keep your old injured RB for a 6th round pick.

Especially when it's essentially the same money you just paid your stupid FB to get one carry a game and catch one pass a game.

This move and the juice move have been stupid as hell. Everything up to that point was understandable or expected. These last two are like watching a plane start nose diving.

If this is the way forward better just sell everyone and clear cap space....
So Cmac is an old injured RB but a guy who has never carried the load and got hurt the moment he was attempting to is a long term bet?

Jordan Masons are a dime a dozen.

Do you know how the 2nd round tender works?

49ers moved up almost a whole round this year and are getting a 6th round pick next year for an UDFA at a position the team has had repeated success at.

When the Chiefs franchise tagged Sneed a former 4th round pick and a dominant corner and only got a future 3rd round and only a swap of 7th round picks the year they actually traded him...why didn't they get a first round + like the franchise tag indicates?

The tags simply give you leverage vs other teams but they're within reason. A backup RB isn't going to fetch a premium return in a RB rich draft.

Mason is a good player, but a backup. Hopefully this statement doesn't come back to haunt me, but I think this was a good sell high maneuver. Esp. for a UDFA player.
