It doesn't happen often. What you're referring to his athletes with undiagnosed HOCM - this is supposed to be screened for in the NFL and NBA with ECHOs.

The problem is lower divisions, poorer countries (especially in Africa which is a source for much developmental talent), youth leagues and so on. Competitive soccer has incredible of depth of participation globally, and standards are not always reaching to the lower levels.

This happens quite often in soccer. Happened to a Danish player at the last European championships. Lucky after the life saving CPR he went on to make a full recovery.

if the ambulance was waiting for relatives to arrive it says to me he's not in immediate life threatening situation. Fingers crossed he gets a positive outcome.

I actually knew a kid in middle school (not well) who ran into a goalpost playing soccer. He ran into it chest first. His heart stopped and died.

Probably
This is why the entire Premier League Stadiums are required to have Defibrillators. Few years back during a Liverpool game a fan had a major cardiac arrest and the accessibility of the defibrillator saved the persons life.
Bayless is pond scum. I hope he loses his gig and finds himself unemployed and unemployable. Then hopefully he will learn about empathy and compassion. The game is just that a friggin game. it's NOT IMPORTANT at all. It's just entertainment. Life is important. I can't believe that there are people that would value a game over a life...
NFL is just waiting for good news about Hamlin...(which is why they are delaying/stalling the decision to postpone the game) and then they will tell the players the game will continue. The suits will figure the players will be so happy that they would be willing to play.

As far as game delays, we've seen hour long delays before because of weather I believe.... so the NFL will be determined still continue it.

Super sad at that young age.

I'm an emergency medicine/critical care physician. If he has a pulse that's the most important thing. We can establish an airway for him. I wonder if the syncope/collapse is even related to the hit he suffered. Spine injury causing spinal/neurogenic shock leading to the arrest? Maybe. I wonder if he has undiagnosed HOCM or some undiagnosed cardiac abnormality but from what I know athletes are screened with ECHOs now a days...just throwing thoughts out there. Really hoping he's ok, I have faith if he has a stable rhythm.

Reminded me of just this:

Lawler took several, sharp blows directly to the chest which resulted in cardiac arrest and needing lengthy CPR and immediate emergency treatment.
