Because he is playing. Players get better with more reps, Who would have thought. The same will happen with Trey. Except Trey will be better.
It would be nice to think so but I doubt it. Fields is just more talented. We're talking about a guy who was basically even with Lawrence in their recruiting class and again basically even, or should have been basically even in their draft class but people were enamored with the flavors of the month in Zach Wilson, and well, Lance.
Of course ultimately it will come down to processing things at this level for both. Also ultimately it doesn't matter if Trey is better than Fields or not. What's done is done and he just needs to be good enough to justify what was given up for him regardless of where that puts him in the overall pecking order.
If that is the way we should evaluate the 2021 QB draft class, Trey Lance must turn out to be the best of the bunch. No other team gave up anywhere near what the 49ers gave up for Lance.
On that basis, I would suggest Fields is the best of the class as of right now.
I mean yeah I get what you're saying.
But what I was saying, and maybe could have said it better on short notice on my phone is it really shouldn't matter which is "better". All that matters is that he plays well enough to justify our taking that risk on him.
If Justin Fields is a 7 time Pro Bowler, just to throw numbers out, and Trey is a 6 timer, who cares?
If Fields wins a league MVP and Trey wins a Super Bowl who cares? In fact, I'd say we'd come out the winners in that one.
I wish we would have taken Fields not only as an Ohio State fan but because I thought he was the better player and safer pick. But if Trey becomes one of the league's best it all works out no matter if he's better than or worse than Fields.
